RFID-enabled Smart Bins Automate Food Waste Data Collection for Businesses

RFID-enabled Smart Bins Automate Food Waste Data Collection for Businesses

UK-based technology company, Limetrack, has developed an innovative IoT-enabled bin solution that uses RFID access control and precision scales to automate food waste tracking for businesses. Designed to support the requirements of the UK’s Simpler Recycling legislation, the system logs each disposal event by user, weight and category, transmitting the data to a cloud analytics platform.

The deployment is aimed at organisations such as NHS trusts, independent schools, hotels and care homes, as well as commercial waste management companies. Major names such as Sky and the hospitality company Convene are already trialling the bins across multiple sites.

Unlike traditional waste-collection models, Limetrack’s system focuses on data collection rather than actual waste processing. It offers business customers real-time visibility of bin usage and generates compliant reporting, thus enabling smarter routing of collection vehicles and more efficient servicing.

With more than two million UK business sites expected to be affected by the Simpler Recycling deadline in 2025 (rising to 6.2 million by 2027) the challenge of food-waste separation is significant.
In future, the company plans to roll out AI-driven waste-reduction analytics and electronic point-of-sale integration, intending to turn raw disposal data into predictive insights.

This shows how RFID technology combined with IoT sensors can help with logistics in food-waste management, delivering better compliance, operational transparency and route optimisation for sectors producing regulated food waste streams.
