<p>There are three real paths: buy an off-the-shelf platform, build something custom, or configure a low-code or middleware solution. Each has a legitimate use case. The wrong choice adds months to your timeline, inflates costs, or leaves you locked into a system that cannot grow.</p>
<h2>Off-the-Shelf Platforms</h2>
<p>Purpose-built RFID software platforms cover the most common use cases: asset tracking, inventory management, access control, and supply chain visibility. Vendors like Zebra, Impinj (xArray/ItemSense), and a range of independent software vendors ship with pre-built reader integrations, tag filtering logic, and reporting dashboards.</p>
<p>Time-to-value is the main argument here. A warehouse team can be reading tags and viewing real-time inventory within days. Licensing fees are predictable, support is available, and the vendor handles firmware and API changes when reader hardware is updated.</p>
<p>The catch is customisation. If your process does not map neatly to the platform&#8217;s data model, you will be working around the software rather than with it. Integration with existing ERP or WMS systems can also require paid professional services that erode the cost advantage.</p>

<p>The cost is real though. A capable RFID software team is not cheap, and the initial development cycle typically runs six to eighteen months for anything complex. Ongoing maintenance falls entirely on you, and when hardware or protocols evolve, so does your codebase. Budget three to five times your initial development estimate for total five-year cost of ownership.</p>
<h2>Low-Code Configuration</h2>
<p>The middle path has matured significantly. Platforms like EPCIS-based middleware, Node-RED-style integration tools, and cloud IoT services from AWS or Azure now support RFID data ingestion with configurable processing pipelines.</p>
<p>You define the tag event logic, filtering rules, and data routing through configuration rather than code. This approach works well for organisations with development resources but no dedicated RFID engineering team. Integration with REST APIs, SQL databases, and cloud queues is straightforward.</p>
<p>It is not fully custom, and complex edge cases still require scripting. But for the majority of industrial tracking deployments, low-code configuration delivers 80% of what custom development would at roughly 20% of the cost and a fraction of the timeline.</p>
<h2>Making the Decision</h2>
<p>Ask these questions before committing to an approach:</p>
