Paris is finally opening its gates to the bank card. Ile-de-France Mobilites, the authority that runs public transport across the Paris region, has confirmed that contactless bank card payment will be rolled out across the metro from July 2027, extending an open-loop ticketing model that is already carrying passengers on the region’s buses.

The first two rail-side deployments are live now. Direct tap to pay at the gate went into service at the Orly Airport exit of metro line 14 on 30 June 2026, followed by the Montmartre funicular on 8 July 2026. From there the programme steps up: line 1 in July 2027, lines 4, 14, 15 and 18 by the end of 2027, lines 7 and 12 by the end of 2028, and full network coverage targeted for 2030.

Buses got there first. Contactless bank card acceptance is already operational on Paris and inner-ring bus routes, with 1,300 validators installed and 300,000 validations recorded so far.

Open-loop versus closed-loop, and why it matters

The distinction is worth spelling out, because the two systems share an air interface but almost nothing else. Navigo, the region’s transit credential, is closed-loop: the card or the phone-based Navigo profile holds a transit product issued by the transport authority, validated against the operator’s own scheme. Open-loop ticketing instead accepts the payment card the passenger already carries, using EMV contactless, with fare calculation and settlement happening in the background through the normal payments rails.

Physically, both taps look identical to the reader. EMV contactless and NFC wallet payments run over the same 13.56 MHz HF interface defined by ISO/IEC 14443, which is also the basis for most transit smart cards. A contactless bank card, an Apple Pay or Google Wallet tap from an NFC enabled phone, and a Navigo card are all speaking to the same class of reader front end. What differs is the application on top and, crucially, where the fare logic sits.

That difference is what makes gate-side EMV hard. A retail terminal can afford a second or two of chatter with the card and the acquirer. A metro turnstile cannot, because throughput at a busy Paris interchange is measured in passengers per minute and any hesitation at the gate propagates backwards into the concourse. Transit-grade open-loop therefore leans on offline risk management at the reader and deferred authorisation, so the barrier opens on a local decision and the money is settled afterwards. It is a genuinely different engineering problem from a shop counter, and it explains why open-loop metro deployments consistently lag open-loop bus deployments.

Convenience at a price

Passengers pay for the convenience. At 2026 rates, a bus or funicular journey paid by bank card costs 2.55 euros, which is 50 cents above the standard ticket. Metro, train and RER journeys cost 3.35 euros, an 80 cent premium, and airport tickets are 14.80 euros, also 80 cents above the standard fare. The surcharge reflects the transaction costs that come with running fares through the card schemes rather than through a prepaid transit product, and it keeps Navigo the cheaper option for anyone travelling regularly.

The timing also lands after a significant change on the ground: magnetic paper tickets were withdrawn network wide on 1 November 2025. Meanwhile the annual Navigo pass on iPhone, delivered over NFC, has slipped from July to September 2026. For occasional riders and visitors, that leaves the bank card in the pocket as the most straightforward way to travel while the closed-loop options catch up.
