<p>For organisations that have moved beyond pilot projects and deployed RFID at scale, a recurring problem tends to surface: knowledge becomes fragmented. One team knows the intricacies of UHF antenna placement, another understands the middleware integration, and a third manages vendor contracts. Nobody has the full picture. Building an internal RFID Centre of Excellence (CoE) is the structural answer to that problem, and it pays dividends well beyond tidying an org chart.</p>
<h2>What a Centre of Excellence Actually Does</h2>
<p>A CoE is not a committee that meets quarterly to review PowerPoints. It is a living function that owns the organisation&#8217;s RFID capability end to end. That means setting technical standards, governing vendor relationships, running training programmes, and maintaining a pipeline of innovation projects. Done properly, it prevents costly reinvention every time a new deployment lands on someone&#8217;s desk, and it stops the business from being over-reliant on a single supplier&#8217;s interpretation of what good looks like.</p>
<h2>Organisational Structure</h2>
<p>The most effective RFID CoE structures are lean. A core team of three to six people, depending on the scale of deployment, can serve an enterprise provided they have clear authority and visible executive sponsorship. Typical roles include a CoE lead with both technical and commercial competency, one or two RFID systems engineers covering the RF physics, hardware, and integration layers, a data and software specialist who understands how tag reads translate into business events, and a training and knowledge coordinator. The CoE should sit close enough to operations to remain grounded in real-world constraints, but with enough independence to challenge status quo decisions.</p>
<h2>Knowledge Management</h2>
<p>Institutional knowledge walks out of the door when people leave. A CoE needs a structured approach to capturing what it learns. This means maintaining a living technical library covering everything from read rate benchmarking results across different tag form factors to lessons learned from difficult deployments in metal-dense or liquid-heavy environments. Version-controlled documentation, accessible to relevant teams, is far more valuable than informal tribal knowledge. The CoE should also track standards evolution, particularly within GS1, ISO 18000, and the specifications governed by AIM Global, so that the organisation is never caught off guard by a compliance requirement.</p>
<h2>Training Programmes</h2>
<p>Training in RFID is not a one-size-fits-all exercise. A warehouse operative needs to understand how to handle tags correctly and recognise a reader fault. A procurement manager needs to understand the difference between a passive UHF inlay and an active BLE-RFID hybrid well enough to ask the right questions. An IT architect needs to understand the implications of EPC data models on downstream systems. The CoE should own a tiered training framework that serves each of these audiences without drowning any of them in irrelevant detail. Practical, scenario-based learning consistently outperforms vendor-led product training for building genuine competency.</p>
<h2>Vendor Governance</h2>
<p>RFID procurement without governance is expensive. Vendors naturally advocate for their own ecosystems, and without a CoE acting as an informed counterpart, organisations end up with incompatible hardware, proprietary middleware lock-in, and tag specifications that do not survive a change in supplier. The CoE should own a vendor register, conduct periodic performance reviews, and maintain the organisation&#8217;s position on interoperability requirements. That includes holding vendors to agreed read rate performance benchmarks and ensuring that any firmware or software updates are tested against live environments before deployment.</p>
<h2>Innovation Pipeline</h2>
<p>A CoE that only manages what exists will eventually become a bottleneck rather than an enabler. A structured innovation pipeline, even a modest one, keeps the function relevant. This might include evaluating RAIN RFID sensors for condition monitoring, assessing NFC-based consumer engagement use cases, or testing next-generation chip designs with improved performance in challenging environments. Innovations should be assessed against clear criteria: operational feasibility, ROI potential, and alignment with the organisation&#8217;s strategic direction. Small-scale proofs of concept, run within defined time and budget limits, are the right mechanism for this rather than large speculative projects.</p>
<h2>Long-Term Capability Building</h2>
<p>The real value of an RFID CoE compounds over time. As the function matures, it becomes the organisation&#8217;s trusted internal voice on RFID, reducing dependence on external consultants and shortening the procurement cycle for new deployments. It creates career pathways for technically minded people who might otherwise leave. And it gives leadership a single point of accountability for an increasingly business-critical technology. Starting small, with clear scope and genuine executive backing, is far preferable to an ambitious launch that loses momentum within eighteen months. Build the foundation properly and the capability will follow.</p>
