Xerafy Launches Ultra-Thin On-Metal RFID Labels, Pushing Boundaries in Compact Asset Tracking

Xerafy, a leader in industrial RFID solutions, has introduced two new ultra-thin on-metal labels: the Metal Skin® Delta and Metal Skin® Titanium. The launch, announced in mid-October 2025, marks a major step forward for RFID tagging on metallic surfaces where space and weight are limited.

What’s New: Delta and Titanium

The Metal Skin Delta is only 0.4 mm thick, yet maintains strong read range performance even when applied directly to metal. The Metal Skin Titanium is the smallest printable on-metal label in Xerafy’s range, designed for compact or high-value items where traditional RFID tags are too bulky.

Both products are compatible with standard RFID printers, are IP-rated for dust and water resistance, and are suitable for use on metal, plastic and mixed surfaces. The Delta model uses the Impinj M830 chip and can reach read distances of up to around 4.5 metres on metal surfaces, according to product data.

Why It Matters

RFID systems have always faced challenges with metallic surfaces, which can distort radio signals and reduce read performance. Achieving reliable reads with a label as thin as 0.4 mm is a notable technical achievement. This opens up new opportunities for industries such as aerospace, defence, electronics and manufacturing, where space constraints often prevent the use of standard RFID labels.

The new Metal Skin range also supports easier integration into existing workflows. Because the labels are printable and encodable using standard RFID printers, they can be deployed at scale with minimal process changes. The printable surface also allows barcodes or human-readable information to be added, supporting hybrid identification systems.

Challenges and Considerations

There are some trade-offs to consider. Ultra-thin labels may have reduced read range compared to thicker designs, and adhesion reliability must be proven across different metal types and surface finishes. Long-term durability will also be tested in environments involving vibration, heat, or chemical exposure.

Despite these challenges, Xerafy’s innovation shows clear progress in the ongoing miniaturisation of RFID technology. The ability to tag smaller assets and components effectively brings the vision of complete asset traceability a step closer, supporting wider adoption of RFID and digital twin systems across industry.
