Plumas County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility in California is rolling out a passive RFID-based inmate tracking system from Guardian RFID, the most widely deployed inmate tracking platform in the United States.

The system centres on Clincher RFID wristbands — non-transferable bands fitted with passive UHF RAIN RFID inlays that each carry a unique encrypted identifier. Wall-mounted RFID reference tags installed throughout the facility define distinct zones, while four Spartan 3 handheld devices give officers a rugged, Android-based mobile interface to scan wristbands, verify identities against inmate photos, and log movements in real time.

Jail Commander Steve Clark said the deployment will streamline how the facility collects and stores data on inmate locations, movements, and welfare checks. By replacing radio calls, paper logs, and manual data entry with electronic capture at the point of interaction, Clark expects staff time savings of 25 percent or more. All recorded data is available immediately to every authorised member of staff through Guardian RFID’s cloud-hosted platform, which runs on AWS infrastructure.

Beyond location tracking, the system strengthens accountability on both sides of the bars. It notifies officers when scheduled safety and welfare checks are due, and raises alerts if those checks are not completed at randomised intervals or within required timeframes. Every officer action is time-stamped and logged, creating an auditable record of staff activity across the facility.

Funding for the project is expected to come through Medi-Cal reimbursement. Because the Guardian RFID platform also maintains inmate medical records and documents the time medical staff spend with each inmate, the county’s alternative sentencing coordinator identified it as eligible for healthcare funding. She anticipates that Medi-Cal reimbursements will fully cover the cost of the system.

Guardian RFID has scheduled consultant-led training at the facility for March 24-25, followed by an additional day of on-site observation and support. Once operational, Clark hopes to expand the deployment with battery-powered RF transmitters capable of monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels for medically vulnerable inmates, working alongside Plumas County Public Health.

The Plumas County rollout adds to a growing list of US correctional facilities — now supported by more than 75,000 officers nationwide — that rely on Guardian RFID’s combination of RAIN RFID hardware, mobile devices, and cloud-based software to modernise their custody operations.

The post Plumas County Jail Deploys Guardian RFID System for Inmate Tracking first appeared on RFID News.

The National Museum of Singapore is marking the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s independence with two major new visitor experiences that chart the nation’s journey from early settlement to modern global city. While the centrepiece of the announcement is cultural storytelling and immersive exhibition design, a notable element underpinning the visitor experience is the use of High Frequency RFID (NFC) wristband technology to personalise and deepen engagement.

The first experience, Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time, serves as an immersive introduction to Singapore’s history. Located within the Shaw Foundation Glass Rotunda, it combines large scale projections, soundscapes and interactive storytelling to transport visitors through pivotal moments in the nation’s past. On arrival, visitors are issued with an HF RFID embedded wristband, which becomes a digital key throughout the exhibition. Using the wristband, visitors select a “Magical Companion”, inspired by Singapore’s native animals, which then guides their journey and unlocks hidden layers of content as they move through the space.

This application of RFID enables the museum to deliver a tailored narrative without requiring visitors to use personal devices. As guests progress through the galleries, the wristband triggers personalised interactions, revealing additional historical insights and responding dynamically to visitor choices. The technology supports a seamless and intuitive experience, aligning well with the museum’s aim of creating an accessible, family friendly introduction to Singapore’s history.

RFID wristbands also play a significant role in the second exhibition, Once Upon a Tide: Singapore’s Journey from Settlement to Global City. This exhibition explores the influence of maritime trade, rivers and coastal routes on Singapore’s development over more than 700 years. Spread across five themed sections and featuring over 350 artefacts, the exhibition incorporates interactive elements where visitors answer reflective questions using their RFID wristbands. These responses generate one of four digital avatars, encouraging visitors to consider their own values and aspirations in the context of Singapore’s evolving identity.

From an RFID perspective, this deployment highlights how passive identification technology can be used beyond access control or ticketing. In this case, RFID becomes a tool for engagement, data-driven storytelling and collective participation, all while remaining unobtrusive. It allows the museum to link visitor interactions across multiple zones and experiences, creating a continuous narrative journey.

The National Museum of Singapore’s anniversary programme demonstrates how RFID can enhance cultural spaces by supporting personalisation, interactivity and reflection, reinforcing its growing role within modern museum and exhibition environments.

The VCBW Craft Beer and Music Festival, presented by Go RVing Canada will be held at the PNE Fairground from July 9th to 10th 2022, with live entertainment, local arts, chef pop-ups and food trucks and of course a celebration of craft beer.

This year the festival is under new ownership who have recently announced that they will be implementing new RFID technology for the festival. This year the event will be totally cashless, with payment via an RFID wristband payment system. The organisers claim this is due to ‘logistical and health reasons’ on the FAQs of their website.

All guests will receive a wristband with their ticket to the event, they can then pre-load that wristband with funds to allow them to purchase food and more critically beer! VCBW claim that this is a 5 second process!

The event organisers have committed that any remaining funds on a wristband will be refunded to the ticket holder.

While it is a misnomer that money will be ‘loaded onto’ a wristband, but rather funds attached to that wristbands UUID in the backend database system, this trend for wristband payment at festivals is something which is becoming more prevalent.
