<h2>LLRP: The Foundation Protocol</h2>
<p>The Low Level Reader Protocol (LLRP) remains the bedrock of RFID reader communication. Ratified by EPCglobal (now part of GS1), LLRP provides a standardised binary interface between UHF RAIN RFID readers and client applications. It gives developers granular control over air interface parameters, inventory operations, and tag access commands.</p>
<p>LLRP operates over TCP, typically on port 5084, and uses a message-based architecture. Developers can configure ROSpecs (Reader Operation Specifications) to define how and when the reader inventories tags, and AccessSpecs to perform read/write operations on tag memory banks. Open-source libraries like sllurp for Python and the LLRP Toolkit for Java and C++ make integration straightforward, though the protocol&#8217;s verbose message structure can feel heavy for simple use cases.</p>
<p>The real strength of LLRP is portability. Because it is a GS1 standard, code written for one vendor&#8217;s reader will generally work with another. That said, most production deployments quickly discover that LLRP alone is not always enough.</p>
<h2>Vendor SDKs: Power at a Cost</h2>
<p>Reader manufacturers like Impinj, Zebra, and Alien Technology all provide proprietary SDKs that sit on top of (or alongside) LLRP. These SDKs unlock vendor-specific features such as advanced filtering, antenna configuration profiles, GPIO control, and firmware management.</p>
<p>Zebra&#8217;s RFID SDK for Android, for example, is essential for building applications on their handheld readers like the MC3300xR. <h2>MQTT and Event Streaming</h2>
<p>Where REST handles configuration and control, MQTT handles the high-volume, real-time tag data. Both Impinj and Zebra readers support native MQTT output, pushing tag read events directly to a broker like Mosquitto or HiveMQ. This pub/sub model is a natural fit for RFID because readers generate bursts of data that downstream systems need to consume asynchronously.</p>
<p>For larger deployments, some teams route MQTT data into Apache Kafka or similar streaming platforms to handle deduplication, event ordering, and long-term storage. The Impinj R700 also supports HTTP streaming as an alternative for teams that prefer server-sent events over MQTT.</p>
<h2>What Developers Should Consider</h2>
<p>Choosing the right API approach depends on scale and complexity. For a single reader proof of concept, the REST API gets you running in minutes. For a warehouse with 50 readers processing thousands of tag events per second, you will need MQTT or Kafka to keep up. LLRP gives you the deepest control and broadest compatibility, but demands more development effort.</p>
<p>Whichever path you take, invest early in a clean abstraction layer, solid error handling for dropped reader connections, and a strategy for deduplicating tag reads. The readers will do their job. For Impinj, diversifying its manufacturing footprint reduces dependence on a single production location and provides a buffer against potential disruptions, whether from trade policy changes, natural events, or capacity constraints.</p>
<p>There is also a tariff dimension worth considering. With ongoing trade tensions and shifting import duty structures, assembling products in Malaysia rather than the US can offer cost advantages when shipping to certain markets. While Impinj has framed the move purely in terms of supply chain resilience, the financial benefits of a Malaysian assembly point are difficult to ignore.</p>
<p>For existing customers, the transition should be seamless. No changes are required to open purchase orders. Units shipped before July 2026 will continue to come from US facilities, while shipments from July onwards may originate from either location. The RAIN RFID technology provider reported Q1 revenue of $74.3 million and highlighted record endpoint IC bookings that point to significant momentum heading into the second quarter.</p>
<p>CEO Chris Diorio described the results as &#8220;solid,&#8221; noting that the record bookings are driving a robust outlook for Q2 2026. The company is guiding for second quarter revenue between $103.0 million and $106.0 million, representing substantial sequential growth of roughly 39% to 43% from Q1 levels.</p>
<p>On the profitability front, Impinj reported a GAAP net loss of $25.3 million, or $0.83 per diluted share, for the first quarter. However, the headline loss figure was heavily influenced by an $11.9 million induced conversion expense tied to the company&#8217;s convertible notes. Stripping out that one-off charge, the underlying operating performance was considerably stronger. Non-GAAP net income came in at $4.4 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, while adjusted EBITDA reached $3.4 million.</p>
<p>Cash flow generation also showed marked improvement. Impinj delivered positive free cash flow of $2.2 million during Q1, a sharp turnaround from the negative $13.0 million recorded in the same period last year. That swing reflects both operational discipline and growing demand for the company&#8217;s RAIN RFID solutions.</p>
<p>GAAP gross margin stood at 49.1% for the quarter, with non-GAAP gross margin reaching 52.4%. Both figures demonstrate the healthy margins that Impinj&#8217;s endpoint IC and reader portfolio continues to command in the UHF RFID market.</p>
<p>The second quarter outlook is particularly striking. Beyond the revenue jump, Impinj expects GAAP net income of $7.6 million to $9.1 million, a return to profitability after the Q1 loss. Adjusted EBITDA is projected to land between $27.8 million and $29.3 million, while non-GAAP net income per diluted share is forecast at $0.77 to $0.82.</p>
<p>Impinj sits at the heart of the RAIN RFID ecosystem, supplying the endpoint ICs (tag chips), readers, gateways, and software that enable item-level visibility across retail, logistics, and supply chain applications. The company&#8217;s record bookings suggest that enterprise adoption of RAIN RFID technology continues to accelerate, with more organizations deploying UHF-based solutions for inventory management, asset tracking, and loss prevention.</p>

<p>For a firm with Baillie Gifford’s track record of backing companies through long innovation cycles, Impinj fits the profile. RAIN RFID is moving from an inventory management tool used by early adopters to a core piece of supply chain infrastructure, and Impinj is one of the few pure play suppliers able to provide the silicon that powers it. Every tag that ends up on a garment, a pallet, or a pharmaceutical carton drives chip volumes, and those volumes are climbing as more sectors adopt item level tagging.</p>
<p>The investment lands at an interesting moment for Impinj’s share price. Shares opened the day at $104.71, well below a 52 week high of $247.06 and closer to the $62.94 low. Analyst sentiment is mixed, with a consensus rating of Hold and an average price target of $167.63. Recent earnings were in line with expectations at $0.50 per share, on revenue of $92.85 million that slightly topped estimates, though the company still carries a negative net margin and has guided to a softer first quarter.</p>
<p>Despite the near term noise, the longer term story is compelling enough to attract the kind of capital Baillie Gifford commits. RAIN RFID tag shipments are on a sustained growth curve, and Impinj retains a dominant position in the reader chip market, which gives it pricing leverage and a direct window into customer demand. New verticals including food, logistics, and passwordless authentication are starting to scale, and each one pulls on the same core silicon that Impinj designs.</p>
<p>Beyond Baillie Gifford, other institutional investors have been adjusting their positions as well. Bessemer Group and Advisors Asset Management both added to their holdings in recent quarters, suggesting that a wider cohort of professional investors is willing to look past quarterly volatility in pursuit of the longer RAIN RFID growth story.</p>
<p>For the RFID industry, the signal is worth noting. The project, delivered by Kyubi System, was recently published as a success story by RFID Journal in March 2026.</p>
<p>The deployment tackles a problem that will be familiar to any retailer dealing with high SKU counts and unpredictable seasonal demand. Party Fiesta&#8217;s product range shifts dramatically around Halloween, Christmas, and Carnival, making traditional inventory management a constant headache. Manual stock counts were time-consuming, error-prone, and simply couldn&#8217;t keep pace with the volume of product movement across the shop floor.</p>
<p>The solution centres on Impinj M700 platform-based RFID tags applied at item level, giving every product in the store a unique digital identity. Overhead Zebra Technologies ATR7000 ceiling-mounted RFID readers continuously scan the retail environment, tracking product movement in real time without any manual intervention. Kyubi System describes the result as a &#8220;fully sensorized retail environment,&#8221; and the phrase is apt. The store essentially knows where its inventory is at all times.</p>
<p>At the point of sale, Party Fiesta has installed the AIR! EASY Pay Table, an RFID-enabled checkout surface that reads all tagged items simultaneously. Customers simply place their products on the table and the system identifies everything instantly, removing the need for individual barcode scanning. It is a faster, smoother checkout experience that cuts queue times and reduces staffing pressure at tills.</p>
<p>Behind the scenes, middleware ties the RFID data layer into Party Fiesta&#8217;s existing enterprise systems, ensuring that inventory counts, replenishment triggers, and sales data all flow through a single source of truth. This integration is critical. RFID hardware alone does not transform a retail operation. The real value comes when tag reads feed directly into stock management, purchasing, and loss prevention workflows.</p>
<p>The results speak for themselves. Party Fiesta now has real-time inventory visibility across the store, phantom stock has been eliminated, and stock-outs have been significantly reduced. Staff who previously spent hours on manual counts have been redeployed to customer-facing roles, improving the overall shopping experience. For a retailer managing thousands of SKUs with concentrated peak demand windows, these are meaningful operational gains.</p>
<p>The project is a strong example of how UHF RFID technology, when deployed as a complete ecosystem rather than a point solution, can fundamentally change how a retail store operates. Party Fiesta&#8217;s Barcelona flagship is now a reference site for Retail 4.0, and it would not be surprising to see the chain roll this out across its wider European store network.</p>

<p>The new inlays sit within the company’s Optica Food Solutions portfolio and are engineered to tackle the specific RF challenges that have historically made tagging fresh food unreliable. High-moisture products, cold storage environments and tightly packed shelf layouts all degrade read performance with conventional inlay designs. IdentiFresh addresses this through a proprietary antenna geometry and inlay construction that maintains consistent readability even on densely stacked items in chilled meat cases and refrigerated display units.</p>
<p>At the IC level, the inlays leverage Impinj’s M800 series endpoint ICs with Gen2X capability, delivering improved tag population management and faster inventory reads in challenging conditions. The compact form factor has been designed to integrate with existing label formats, so retailers and suppliers can adopt the technology without overhauling their current labeling equipment or workflows.</p>
<p>The flexibility of the platform supports both in-store and supplier-side tagging. That distinction matters because it gives retailers multiple deployment paths. A grocer could begin by tagging at the store level to gain immediate shelf-level inventory accuracy, then extend upstream to supplier facilities as the programme scales.</p>
<p>The launch builds on Avery Dennison’s existing work with major US food retailers including Walmart and Kroger, both of which have been exploring RFID adoption across fresh categories.</p>
<p>The timing is significant. A recent survey of 3,500 food retailers and supply chain leaders globally found that 50% identified meat as a particularly difficult category for waste, with 45% citing produce and 28% pointing to baked goods. Over half of respondents said that poor inventory management and overstocking are major contributors to food waste, a problem whose economic cost across the global supply chain is projected to hit $540 billion by 2026.</p>
<p>Mathieu De Backer, VP of Intelligent Labels Innovation at Avery Dennison, described the launch as a breakthrough that enables reliable RFID use on fresh items from production through to the point of sale. George Dyche, VP of Endpoint IC Product at Impinj, noted the broader benefit simply: when food is sold before it expires, everyone wins.</p>
<p>For the wider RAIN RFID ecosystem, IdentiFresh represents a meaningful step. Fresh food has long been considered one of the hardest retail categories to tag at item level.
