Tageos unveils EOS-450 MW microwave-compatible RAIN RFID inlays for food packaging

Tageos has launched two RAIN RFID inlays built specifically for packaged food: the EOS-450 MW M830 and the EOS-450 MW UX. The company announced them on 15 September 2026 and is showing them at LOUPE Americas 2026 in Chicago, on Booth #420. Both are engineered to cope with a trip through a microwave oven, which is a harder problem than it first sounds.

Tageos is a Montpellier-based designer and manufacturer of RFID, NFC and wireless IoT inlays and tags, part of the Fedrigoni Group since 2022, with manufacturing and offices across Europe, the Americas and Asia. An inlay is the working core of a smart label: a thin antenna, typically etched or printed aluminium, with an RFID chip bonded to it, supplied on a reel so that label converters and service bureaus can laminate it into printed face stock and turn it into a finished label.

Why a metal antenna in a microwave is a problem

RAIN RFID is the passive UHF branch of RFID, working in the 860 to 960 MHz band and readable at a few metres by a handheld or a fixed portal, with no battery in the tag. It is the technology behind item-level tagging in apparel retail, and it has been moving into grocery and food service for the same reasons: fast stock counts, accurate availability data and tills that read a whole basket at once.

Food brings a complication clothing does not. A UHF antenna is physically a thin strip of metal with edges and corners. Put metal in a microwave and the field concentrates at those edges and at any sharp point in the conductor, where the induced voltage can be high enough to ionise the air and throw a visible spark. Fine traces and thin foil are the worst offenders, because they have plenty of edge and very little mass to absorb the energy. That is why a conventional RAIN inlay on a ready meal has to be peeled off before the pack goes in the oven, and why a label that can stay put is worth designing for.

Tageos says the EOS-450 MW antennas use specialised designs engineered to resist arcing and sparking under defined microwave conditions. It has not published the geometry, a power rating or the test regime behind that, so it reads as a controlled-conditions result rather than a blanket guarantee for any oven at any setting. The commercial point stands either way: a label that survives reheating can stay on the pack for its whole life, from the factory to the customer’s kitchen.

Two chip platforms, one antenna family

The variants differ in the silicon rather than the concept. The EOS-450 MW M830 is built on Impinj’s M830. Impinj is a Seattle-based maker of RAIN RFID chips and readers and one of the two dominant suppliers of UHF tag ICs. The M830 offers 128-bit EPC memory, extended read range, AutoTune, improved backscatter efficiency and Gen2X enhancements. AutoTune is the chip correcting its own input match to compensate for the way nearby material detunes the antenna, which matters on packaging full of liquid and foil.

The EOS-450 MW UX uses NXP’s UCODE X. NXP Semiconductors is a Dutch chipmaker and the other major supplier in this market. UCODE X gives configurable EPC memory from 96 to 208 bits with up to 32 bits of user memory, fast encoding, very low power consumption, Gen2v2 compliance and memory safeguards with auto-repair. Encoding speed matters commercially, because a converter writing millions of unique codes a day is paid by throughput.

Offering one antenna family on two competing chip platforms is deliberate. Tageos calls it a technology-agnostic approach, and in practice it also lets a buyer work around whichever IC has better availability or pricing that quarter.

What the tags are for

Tageos lists the familiar grocery set: inventory and expiry date management, track and trace, loss prevention, and self-checkout in food retail and in QSRs, the quick service restaurant category that covers fast food chains. Expiry date management tends to pay for itself first, because a tag carrying a unique identity rather than a product code lets staff find the exact packs about to date out instead of working along a shelf by hand. That overlaps with food safety record keeping, where per-item traceability is increasingly expected rather than optional.

“The market for RAIN RFID-based food tagging is growing rapidly, and customers are increasingly demanding inlays that are specifically tailored to the practical requirements of modern food packaging and handling,” said Jeremy Wade, Vice President of Sales Americas, Advanced Business, at Tageos. “We are combining microwave compatibility with best-in-class RAIN RFID performance, a combination that is essential for reliable, large-scale item-level visibility.”

The inlays come in dry, wet clear, paper-face and plastic-face formats. A dry inlay is antenna and chip with no adhesive, a wet inlay adds pressure-sensitive adhesive under a clear film face, and the paper-face and plastic-face versions arrive already carrying a printable surface.

Tageos is presenting the pair as a first step rather than a finished range, with further microwave-compatible inlays planned. The significant part is arguably not the two part numbers, but that a major inlay manufacturer now treats microwave survivability as a standing requirement for food rather than a special order.
