A
Active
A tag with its own battery and transmitter that broadcasts under its own power. Longer range (tens to hundreds of metres) and sensor-friendly, but bigger, costlier and battery-limited: used for vehicles, containers and high-value assets.
AIDC
Automatic Identification and Data Capture: the industry acronym covering the same territory as auto-ID: identifying things and getting the data into systems without typing.
Ambient IoT
A new class of battery-free tags that harvest energy from surrounding radio signals and report over Bluetooth: think of it as passive-tag economics meeting IoT sensing. Not RFID by protocol, but competing for the same jobs.
Antenna
The element that turns electrical signals into radio waves and back, on both the reader and the tag. Reader antenna choice (size, gain, polarisation) largely determines where and how reliably tags are read.
Anti-collision
The protocol trick that lets a reader sort out hundreds of tags all answering at once, giving each a turn so every tag in the field gets counted rather than shouting over each other.
Attenuation
The weakening of a radio signal as it travels through cable, air or materials. In RFID it bites hardest in the coax between reader and antenna: every metre of cable and every connector eats a little transmit power, so long cable runs can visibly shorten read range.
Authentication
Proving that an item, tag or message is genuine. RFID supports this at several levels, from checking a factory-locked TID against a database to cryptographic challenge-response built into the chip, and it underpins anti-counterfeiting in pharmaceuticals, luxury goods and ticketing.
Auto-ID
Automatic Identification: the umbrella term for all machine-readable identification: barcodes, RFID, NFC, vision systems and biometrics.
B
Backscatter
How passive UHF tags talk: instead of transmitting, the tag switches its antenna between reflective states, modulating the reader's own signal bouncing back. The reader decodes those reflections as data.
BAP
Battery-Assisted Passive: see semi-passive. The battery boosts sensitivity and enables sensing, but the tag still backscatters rather than transmitting.
Barcode
The optical predecessor and everyday companion of RFID: cheap and universal but needing line of sight and one-at-a-time scanning. Most real deployments run barcodes and RFID side by side.
Binary code
Data written using only the digits 0 and 1. Everything a tag stores, from its EPC to its user memory, is ultimately binary; humans usually read and write it in hexadecimal because 96 ones and zeros are nobody's friend.
Bit
The smallest unit of digital information: a single 0 or 1. Tag memory is sized in bits (a standard EPC is 96 bits), and four bits make one hexadecimal character.
BLE
Bluetooth Low Energy: beacon and sensor radio used for tracking and telemetry. Like UWB, part of the wider auto-ID family rather than RFID proper; ambient IoT tags blur this line.
C
Chip
Everyday name for the tag's integrated circuit. When someone says a tag "has an Impinj chip" or "an NXP chip", they mean the IC.
Chipless RFID
Experimental tags identified by their physical radio signature rather than a silicon chip: promising ultra-low cost and recyclability, still early in commercial life.
Circular-polarised antenna
A reader antenna that rotates the plane of its radio waves as it transmits, so tags can be read in almost any orientation. The trade-off is roughly 3 dB of effective gain versus a linear antenna, so range is a little shorter. The default choice when you cannot control which way tags will face.
Coil
The looped antenna used by LF and HF/NFC tags. These tags couple with the reader magnetically, like a tiny transformer, and the coil is one half of that pair.
Cold chain
Temperature-controlled logistics for food and medicines. Sensor tags and data loggers extend RFID from identity to condition: not just where it went, but whether it stayed cold.
Cycle count
A stock count of part of the estate done routinely rather than a full annual stocktake: RFID handhelds turn cycle counting from a project into a daily 20-minute task.
D
dBi
Decibels relative to an isotropic radiator: the unit of antenna gain. It states how strongly an antenna concentrates energy in its favoured direction compared with a theoretical antenna radiating equally everywhere. Higher dBi means a narrower, longer-reaching beam.
dBm
Decibels referenced to one milliwatt: the unit for reader transmit power and tag sensitivity. 30 dBm is one watt, a common UHF reader maximum, while a modern tag chip can wake on around -20 dBm. The scale is logarithmic: 3 dB either way doubles or halves the power.
dBW
Decibels referenced to one watt. The same logarithmic scale as dBm with a reference a thousand times larger, so 0 dBW equals 30 dBm. Mostly met in regulations that state radiated power limits.
Decibel
The logarithmic unit RF engineering runs on, expressing one power level as a ratio of another: antenna gain, cable loss, signal strength. The rules of thumb: +3 dB doubles power, -3 dB halves it, +10 dB is ten times.
Decoder
In older access-control and LF systems, the electronics that translate a tag reader's raw output into usable card/tag numbers for a controller. In modern systems this function lives inside the reader itself.
Dense reader mode
A Gen2 operating mode that lets many readers work close together, as in a large DC or store estate, without drowning each other out.
Digital twin
A data record mirroring a physical item through its life: what was made, where it has been, what was done to it. Item-level identification is what pins the twin to the right physical object.
DPP
Digital Product Passport: the EU-mandated digital record each regulated product must carry, accessed via a data carrier on the product, with batteries first from 2027. RFID, NFC and QR codes are the carriers; serialised identity is the foundation. Digital Product Passports and RFID →
Dwell time
How long a tag stays in a read zone. Conveyor speed and dwell time set how many read attempts a tag gets: too fast with too little power and items pass through unread.
E
EAS
Electronic Article Surveillance: the anti-theft gates at shop doors. Traditional EAS tags only say "I exist" to trigger alarms; RFID-based EAS knows exactly which item left, merging security with inventory.
Encoder
The RFID-writing element, in a printer or production line, that programs tags with their data and rejects failures.
Encoding
Writing data, usually the EPC, into a tag. Done at label printers ("print and encode"), at tag manufacture ("source tagging"), or in the field with a handheld.
EPC
Electronic Product Code: the GS1 numbering scheme that gives every individual item a unique identity, the serialised successor to the barcode. Stored in a Gen2 tag's EPC memory bank.
EPC memory
The rewritable memory bank in a Gen2 tag that holds the item's Electronic Product Code. Encoding a tag means writing the right EPC here.
F
Far-field communication
Tag reading beyond roughly one wavelength from the antenna, where energy arrives as a propagating radio wave rather than a magnetic field. UHF RFID works in the far field, which is why it reaches metres while inductively coupled LF and HF systems reach centimetres.
Faraday cage
A conductive enclosure that stops radio energy getting in or out. In RFID it is both a tool and a menace: shielded tunnels and test boxes use the effect to confine a read zone, while metal shelving, foil packaging and steel cages use it accidentally, hiding tags from the reader.
Fixed reader
A permanently installed reader wired to antennas covering a specific place: dock door, portal, conveyor, shelf. The infrastructure of always-on visibility.
Form factor
The physical package a tag ships in: wet inlay, printable smart label, hard tag, card, key fob, wristband or embedded token. Same chip, different housing; form factor decides which surfaces and environments the tag survives.
Frequency
The radio band a system operates in, which sets its physics: LF (125-134 kHz), HF/NFC (13.56 MHz) and UHF (860-960 MHz) behave very differently around metal, liquid and distance, which is why choosing the band is the first design decision.
G
Gen2
Shorthand for the GS1 EPC UHF Generation 2 air-interface protocol (ISO/IEC 18000-63): the rulebook readers and passive UHF tags use to talk. Effectively every RAIN RFID product implements it.
GPIO
General Purpose Input/Output: the ports on a fixed reader for wiring in external hardware. Inputs let motion sensors or light barriers trigger reading; outputs let a successful read fire a light stack, buzzer, gate or conveyor diverter. GPIO is how a tag read becomes a physical action.
GS1
The global standards body behind barcodes, the EPC and the data standards RFID systems rely on to mean the same thing across companies. RFID and GS1 standards →
H
Handheld reader
A mobile reader, either a dedicated terminal or a sled gripping a smartphone, used for stock counts, search-and-find and field work. Finding one item in a stockroom is its party trick.
Hard tag
A rigid, reusable security tag pinned to merchandise and removed at the till: increasingly RFID-enabled so the same tag does theft protection and stock counting.
Hexadecimal
Base-16 notation using 0 to 9 and A to F, each character standing for four bits. Tag memory is almost always displayed in hex, turning a 96-bit EPC into a manageable 24-character string.
HF
High Frequency RFID at 13.56 MHz: the band of NFC, contactless cards, library books and pharmaceutical tagging. Range up to about a metre with dedicated readers, centimetres with phones. What is HF RFID? →
High Frequency

I
IC
Integrated Circuit: the chip at the heart of every tag, holding its memory and radio logic. In RFID conversation, "the IC" and "the chip" are interchangeable.
Inductive coupling
How LF and HF systems, including NFC, power and read tags: the reader's antenna coil generates a magnetic field, the tag's coil draws energy from it, and the chip varies its electrical load to signal back. It only works within the near field, hence centimetre-scale read ranges.
Inlay
A tag in its rawest usable form: chip plus antenna on a thin substrate, ready to be converted into a label or embedded into packaging or a product. Inlays are what tag factories ship to label converters by the billion.
Input/output ports
The connection points on a reader that take triggers in from sensors and send signals out to lights, gates and other equipment. See GPIO.
Integrated circuit
See IC: the silicon chip on a tag that stores its identity and manages communication with the reader.
Interrogator
An older, formal name for an RFID reader, still common in standards documents. Reader and interrogator mean the same device.
Inventory accuracy
The percentage of stock records that match physical reality. Retail barcode operations typically run 65-75%; item-level RFID counts push into the high 90s, which is the economic engine of most retail deployments.
ISO 18000
The ISO/IEC standard family defining RFID air interfaces per frequency band: part -63 is passive UHF (Gen2), part -3 covers HF. Compliance is what makes hardware interoperable across vendors.
Isotropic
Radiating equally in every direction. A perfectly isotropic antenna cannot be built, but it is the reference point against which real antenna gain is measured: the "i" in dBi.
Item-level tagging
Tagging every individual unit rather than cartons or pallets: the retail standard that enables per-item inventory, EAS, self-checkout and Digital Product Passports.
K
Kill command
A Gen2 feature that permanently and irreversibly silences a tag, using a password: designed for consumer privacy at the point of sale.
L
Label
A printable adhesive tag: the paper or plastic face the user sees, with an RFID inlay laminated inside. The dominant tag format by volume.
LF
Low Frequency RFID, 125-134 kHz: short range (centimetres) but exceptionally tolerant of metal and water, which is why it runs animal identification, car immobilisers and industrial applications. What is LF RFID? →
Linear-polarised antenna
A reader antenna that transmits in one fixed plane. It concentrates energy for longer range and better penetration of dense materials, but tags must be broadly aligned with that plane to read reliably. Best where orientation is consistent, such as cartons on a conveyor.
Lock
Gen2 commands that freeze a tag's memory banks against rewriting, temporarily or permanently: how encoded identities are protected from tampering.
Low Frequency
See LF: the 125-134 kHz band. Slow and short-range, but nearly immune to the liquids and metal that trouble higher frequencies.
M
Middleware
Software between readers and business systems: it filters raw tag reads (one tag may be read hundreds of times) into clean business events like "item arrived", and routes them to ERP, WMS or retail systems. Middleware explained →
MLFF
Multi-Lane Free Flow: barrier-free tolling where vehicles are identified by tag and camera at full speed across all lanes: no plazas, no stopping.
Multiplexer
A switch that lets one reader drive several antennas by cycling through them, one live at a time. Multiplexing covers large areas such as smart shelves and wide portals with fewer readers, trading simultaneous coverage for lower cost.
N
NFC
Near Field Communication: a subset of HF RFID at 13.56 MHz built into virtually every smartphone. Powers tap-to-pay, product authentication, smart packaging and pairing, always at very short, deliberate range. NFC explained →
Noise
Unwanted RF energy in the environment competing with tag replies: motors, welders, variable-speed drives, other radio systems, even neighbouring readers. A high noise floor shrinks read range and reliability; an RF site survey finds it before deployment does.
O
ONS
Object Name Service: the GS1 lookup that resolves an EPC to information about the item, DNS-style. Part of the plumbing behind serialised supply chains.
P
Passive
A tag with no battery: it harvests all its operating power from the reader's radio signal and replies by reflecting that signal. Passive tags are cheap, thin and effectively immortal, which is why they dominate item-level tagging. Active vs passive vs semi-passive RFID →
Polarisation
The orientation of a reader antenna's radio waves. Linear polarisation is stronger but orientation-sensitive; circular polarisation reads tags in any orientation at some cost in range: a key antenna-selection decision.
Portal
A doorway or choke point fitted with reader antennas so everything passing through is read: the classic deployment at dock doors, stockroom doors and shop exits.
R
RAIN RFID
The industry name (from RAdio frequency IdentificatioN) for passive UHF RFID built on the GS1 EPC Gen2 and ISO/IEC 18000-63 standards: the flavour of RFID behind retail tagging, and the one counted in tens of billions of tags a year.
Read range
The maximum distance a tag can be read reliably: millimetres to a metre for LF/HF, up to 10-15 m for passive UHF in good conditions, hundreds of metres for active tags. Governed by frequency, power, antennas, tag design and environment, not by any single spec number.
Read rate
How many tags a reader identifies per second: modern UHF systems read hundreds per second, which is what makes counting a full clothing rail in one sweep possible.
Read/write
A tag whose memory can be changed in the field, as against read-only tags locked at manufacture. Gen2 EPC memory is rewritable unless deliberately locked.
Reader
The device that communicates with tags: it transmits radio energy, receives tag replies and passes the data to software. Readers come as fixed units, handhelds, and modules embedded in printers, tunnels, gates and vehicles.
Reader collision
Interference when nearby readers transmit over each other. Managed by dense reader mode, scheduling and RF planning.
RF site survey
The on-site radio homework before deployment: measuring interference, testing read zones and placing antennas so the installed system reads what it should and nothing it should not. Site surveys and RF planning →
RFID
Radio Frequency Identification: technology that identifies objects, animals or people using radio waves. A reader energises or listens to a tag attached to the item, and the tag replies with its identity, with no line of sight or contact needed. What is RFID and how does it work? →
RFID printer
A label printer with a built-in encoder that prints the human-readable label and writes the tag inside it in one pass, verifying each tag as it goes.
RSSI
Received Signal Strength Indicator: how loudly the reader hears a tag. Used to estimate distance, direction and location, and to filter out stray reads from neighbouring zones.
RTLS
Real-Time Location System: technology that continuously tracks where things are within a space, not just when they pass checkpoints. Built variously on active RFID, UWB, BLE or Wi-Fi.
S
Semi-passive
Also called battery-assisted passive (BAP): a tag whose battery powers its chip and sensors, while communication still works by reflecting the reader's signal. A middle path for range and data logging.
Sensor tag
A tag that reports a measurement (temperature, moisture, strain) along with its identity, passively or with battery assistance: where identification meets condition monitoring.
Serialisation
Giving every individual item its own unique number rather than one code per product line. The step up from barcodes that makes item-level tracking, authentication and Digital Product Passports possible.
Singulation
The process of isolating one tag at a time out of many in the reader's field so it can be read or written individually: the mechanism behind anti-collision.
Smart label
A label containing an RFID or NFC inlay, sometimes with added sensing. The term of art in packaging and logistics for "the label is also a tag".
Source tagging
Applying and encoding tags at the point of manufacture rather than in store or warehouse: the retail industry's preferred model, since items arrive already tagged and verified.
Stray reads
Tags read unintentionally from outside the intended zone, like the stockroom reader seeing shop-floor items: the everyday enemy of accurate RFID data, fought with power tuning, shielding and RSSI filtering.
Substrate
The thin carrier material, commonly PET plastic or paper, that a tag's antenna and chip are mounted on to form an inlay.
T
Tag
The component attached to the thing being identified: a chip holding data, joined to an antenna, packaged as a label, hard tag, card or embedded token. Tags can be passive, active or semi-passive.
Tag orientation
How a tag is angled relative to the reader antenna: with linear polarisation, a badly-oriented tag can vanish. Circular polarisation and careful tag placement are the fixes.
TID
Tag Identifier: a unique, factory-locked serial number burned into every Gen2 chip. Unlike EPC memory it cannot be rewritten, which makes it useful for anti-counterfeiting and tag authentication.
Tolling tag
The windscreen transponder in electronic road tolling: historically active or semi-passive, increasingly passive UHF stickers in barrier-free (MLFF) systems.
Traceability
Knowing where an item came from and where it went, step by step: the compliance-driven cousin of tracking, central to food, pharma and aerospace RFID.
Transponder
The formal name for a tag (TRANSmitter + resPONDER): it responds when interrogated. Common in older literature, animal ID and tolling.
U
UHF
Ultra High Frequency RFID, 860-960 MHz: the long-range workhorse of retail, logistics and industry. A fixed reader can see tags many metres away and hundreds of tags per second, which is what makes item-level inventory practical. What is UHF RFID? →
UID
Unique Identifier: the serial number that makes one tag distinguishable from every other. On HF and NFC chips it is a factory-set serial announced at first contact; on UHF Gen2 chips the equivalent is the TID. Binding the UID to a database record is a common anti-cloning anchor.
Ultra High Frequency
See UHF: the 860-960 MHz band, standardised globally as RAIN RFID, offering metres of range and very fast multi-tag reading.
User memory
Optional extra memory on some tag chips for application data beyond the EPC: service history, batch data, custom fields. Larger user memory costs more and is slower to read in bulk.
UUID
Universally Unique Identifier: a 128-bit identifier generated in software, written like 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000, designed so anyone can create one with effectively no risk of a duplicate. Common in the software and BLE-beacon layers around RFID systems; not the same thing as a tag's hardware UID.
UWB
Ultra-Wideband: a precise radio location technology (centimetre-level accuracy) used in RTLS and phone digital keys. A neighbour of RFID rather than a type of it.
W
WORM
Write Once, Read Many: memory that can be programmed a single time then never changed: the tag equivalent of permanent ink.
