Counting linen is one of those hotel jobs nobody enjoys and everybody has to do. At three Marriott International luxury properties in China, it now takes roughly ten minutes instead of ninety. The change came from an item-level RAIN RFID linen management deployment built by Datamars Textile ID, which has sewn 150,000 UHF RFID laundry tags into bed sheets, towels and bathrobes and connected the reads to a smart linen management system covering the full wash cycle.
The tag is the Datamars LaundryChip FT401-ST, built on an Impinj M800 series endpoint IC. Handheld readers used by housekeeping and room management teams run on Impinj E Family reader ICs. Both the endpoint and reader silicon support Gen2X, Impinj’s standards-compatible extension to the RAIN air interface, which makes this one of the more concrete published examples of Gen2X doing real work in a UHF RFID hospitality environment rather than sitting in a product datasheet.
Where the ninety minutes went
Marriott operates more than 6,500 properties worldwide and over 570 in China, so it is worth being precise about the scope here. The rollout covers three luxury hotels, not the estate, and the headline time savings are quoted against a reference model of a 200-room hotel running at about 80 percent average occupancy. On that basis, the reported before and after figures are:
- Linen counting: about 90 minutes down to about 10 minutes, a 90 percent reduction.
- Housekeeping report recording: about 90 minutes down to about 10 minutes, a 90 percent reduction.
- Warehouse stocktaking: about 5 hours down to about 1 hour, an 80 percent reduction.
The workflow behind those numbers has four steps. Clean linen arrives at a Smart Cabin bulk-reading point, where a trolley is pushed in and every tagged item is read at once while the laundry employee and the hotel laundry manager both witness the count. During room servicing, housekeepers carry a PDA handheld with a compact antenna, scan the room number, scan the items being replaced and confirm the swap, so consumption is recorded at room level with no paperwork. Soiled linen leaves through the same cabin, generating a digital outbound record. Monthly and quarterly stocktakes are done by bulk scanning storage and floor areas with a handheld.
That third step is the quietly important one. Disputes with laundry service providers usually start with a discrepancy between a physical count and a system record at handover, and nobody can prove who was right. An automatic inbound and outbound record at every transfer point removes the argument rather than settling it.
What the tag has to survive
Hotel linen RFID lives or dies on two things: reading densely packed carts reliably, and surviving industrial laundering. Datamars says the LaundryChip 401 uses a patented double loop antenna designed for high-density bulk reads, with over 1,000 tags read in three seconds, so a full cart can be counted without unpacking. Mechanically, the tag is specified to hold up across hundreds of wash, dry and iron cycles without loss of read performance, helped by a very small micro-module that is inherently more robust than a larger one. It is thin enough to be unnoticeable once sewn into a hem, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified for direct skin contact, which matters when the item in question is a bathrobe.
Each tag carries a unique ID linked to the item’s category, status, location and lifecycle data, which is the difference between counting textiles and actually managing them as assets. That is also where Gen2X earns its place, since sensitivity and reliability in dense multi-tag populations is exactly the condition a linen cart creates.
Named end users are rare in this part of the market, and hard before and after numbers rarer still. The Marriott deployment does not appear to have been written up elsewhere in the RFID trade press, despite the Impinj and Datamars partnership itself dating back to 2017. For anyone weighing up RAIN RFID linen management, a case with a named chain and a stated occupancy model behind the percentages is a more useful reference point than most.
