Chainway has announced the MC80, a 5G enterprise handheld that the company bills as one of the first Android 16 terminals to run on Qualcomm’s Dragonwing Q-6690 processor. The Shenzhen manufacturer is not the only vendor lining up behind that chip, but the MC80 is an early look at what it makes possible in a real product.
The interesting part is not the Android version. It is where the RFID radio now lives. Until now, a UHF RFID handheld has effectively been two devices sharing a shell: an application processor running Android, and a separate RAIN RFID reader module with its own transceiver, power amplifier, matching network and firmware, talking to the host over a serial or USB link. That module costs money, occupies board area, adds thickness and draws its own current. The Dragonwing Q-6690 is the first enterprise mobile processor to pull the 860 to 960 MHz reader onto the SoC itself, which is a large part of why Chainway can quote a 15.5mm profile on a device that reads RAIN tags.
Underneath, the Q-6690 is an octa-core part built on a 4nm process, with clock speeds up to 2.9GHz and a dedicated AI engine rated at up to 6 TOPS. Chainway points at image recognition and edge computing as the obvious uses, which in practice means work like on-device label reading, damage checks or shelf recognition running alongside an inventory sweep instead of being shipped off to a server.
Connectivity is current rather than conservative: 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. For data capture, the integrated UHF RFID reader is joined by NFC and an optional Zebra SE55 long range barcode scan engine, so one device covers HF, UHF and 1D/2D barcode. There is a 50MP rear camera plus a front camera. Android 16 arrives with Google Android Enterprise Recommended certification and over the air update support, which matters more than it sounds for anyone maintaining a few hundred terminals across multiple sites.
What Chainway has not published is arguably the list that matters most to anyone specifying a fleet. The announcement gives no read range, no multi-tag read rate, no battery capacity, no display specification and no IP or drop rating, and no price or availability date either. Moving the reader into the SoC also raises fair questions about transmit power, receive sensitivity and thermal behaviour compared with a discrete module, and those get answered by a datasheet rather than a press release.
Chainway is aiming the MC80 at retail, logistics, manufacturing, healthcare and general asset management, the usual homes for a RAIN RFID handheld running cycle counts, goods receipt and asset audits. Qualcomm has said other OEMs including Zebra, Honeywell, Urovo, HMD Secure and CipherLab are also building on the Q-6690, so expect a run of similar launches over the next few months. The MC80 is simply one of the first out with an Android 16 badge on it.
