While much of the conversation has centered on regulation and compliance timelines, there is a technology story here that deserves attention. RFID and NFC are emerging as the backbone infrastructure that will make Digital Product Passports work at scale.</p>
<p>The registry itself operates as a federated index, similar in concept to how DNS works for the internet. It does not store the full contents of every product passport. Instead, it records the existence of each DPP, holds key metadata, and resolves queries to the location where the actual passport data lives. Manufacturers remain responsible for hosting and maintaining their own passport content. The registry simply ensures that every product can be found, verified, and traced.</p>
<p>What makes this system practical is the GS1 Digital Link standard sitting underneath it. GS1 Digital Links encode product identifiers into web-resolvable URIs, and here is the critical detail for the RFID industry: these identifiers are designed to be compatible with both QR codes and RFID tags. This is not an afterthought. It is baked into the technical architecture from the ground up.</p>
<p>NFC tags are particularly well suited to consumer-facing DPP access. An NFC tag embedded in a garment label, a battery casing, or a piece of furniture allows anyone with a smartphone to tap and instantly retrieve that product&#8217;s full sustainability data. Material composition, recycled content percentages, carbon footprint figures, repairability scores, hazardous substance declarations, and end-of-life recycling guidance are all accessible with a single tap. No app download required. No manual searching. The product simply tells you its story.</p>
<p>On the supply chain side, UHF RFID brings a different but equally important capability. Bulk scanning at warehouse docks, distribution centres, and customs checkpoints means that thousands of products can be verified against the central registry in seconds rather than hours. As automated customs verification comes online over the next few years, UHF RFID will be the technology that makes real-time compliance checking feasible at the volumes the EU market demands.</p>
<p>The phased rollout adds urgency. Iron and steel products fall under the requirements immediately alongside the registry launch. Batteries, textiles, tyres, and aluminium follow in 2027. Furniture in 2028. By 2030, most remaining product categories will be covered. That means hundreds of millions of individual product passports across thousands of businesses, all needing reliable, durable identification technology that can survive the full product lifecycle, potentially ten years or more after a product leaves the market.</p>
<p>Platforms like Voittaa&#8217;s Digital Product Passport solution are already enabling businesses to create, manage, and maintain compliant product passports. Having the right platform infrastructure in place now, rather than scrambling as each sector&#8217;s deadline approaches, is the difference between a smooth transition and an expensive one.</p>
<p>A 2022 European Commission assessment found that 53 percent of environmental claims made by companies were vague or misleading. The DPP system, underpinned by verified data carried on RFID and NFC tags, is designed to end that ambiguity. When a product carries an NFC-enabled passport, the claims become verifiable on the spot.</p>
<p>The registry going live is not just a regulatory milestone. <p>The tags already carried Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) Design Recognition in North America. With the addition of RecyClass approval, multinational brand owners can now deploy a single RFID label construction across international supply chains, confident that it meets the recyclability criteria set by both frameworks.</p>
<p>The achievement matters because PET is one of the most widely recycled packaging materials in the world, used in everything from beverage bottles to food containers and cosmetics packaging. Attaching UHF RFID tags to PET containers has historically raised concerns about contamination during mechanical recycling. Metal inlays and adhesive residue can degrade the quality of recovered PET flakes, undermining the circular economy goals that brands are under growing pressure to meet.</p>
<p>AD CleanFlake addresses that tension directly. The solution pairs Avery Dennison&#8217;s proprietary CleanFlake adhesive technology with a patent-pending RFID inlay and label construction designed to separate cleanly from rigid PET during the wash and flotation stages of mechanical recycling. The result is PET flakes free of adhesive and metal contamination, suitable for reuse without sacrificing the traceability and inventory visibility that RFID delivers.</p>
<p>The timing is significant. The EU&#8217;s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will require brands to demonstrate recyclability at scale, and RecyClass Technology Approval provides third-party verification that the AD CleanFlake construction fits within those evolving requirements. Meanwhile, 96% of the top 50 consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands have committed to recyclability and waste management targets, creating strong demand for packaging components that do not compromise recycling streams.</p>
<p>Pascale Wautelet, vice president of global R&amp;D and Sustainability at Avery Dennison Materials Group, said the dual recognition confirms that RFID and PET recyclability no longer need to be in conflict. &#8220;Brands operating across North America and Europe now have a single, approved solution that works within both recycling infrastructures, without compromise,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>Paolo Glerean, chairman of RecyClass, noted that the approval reflects the organisation&#8217;s science-based testing methodology and Avery Dennison&#8217;s commitment to advancing circularity. &#8220;This Approval serves as a testament that recyclable solutions are readily available on the market,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>For brands deploying UHF RFID across PET packaging lines, the dual recognition removes a longstanding barrier. Design-for-recycling requirements no longer force a choice between item-level traceability and end-of-life material recovery. <p>Reusable packaging comes in many forms. Logistics companies rely on tagged pallets and totes that move between warehouses and distribution centres. Restaurants and stadiums use RFID-enabled cups and tableware that customers return after use. Grocery retailers run deposit-return schemes for bottles and containers, scanning each item at collection points to verify returns and trigger refunds automatically.</p>
<p>The core value of RFID in these systems is individual item identification. Each container carries a unique tag, typically a UHF RAIN RFID inlay embedded during manufacture. Readers installed at key points along the journey, such as loading docks, wash stations and return kiosks, capture every movement without manual scanning. This creates a complete lifecycle record for each asset, showing exactly where it is, how many trips it has completed and when it last went through cleaning.</p>
<h2>Cutting Losses and Proving Compliance</h2>
<p>Loss prevention is one of the biggest financial drivers for RFID-tracked reusable packaging. Returnable transport items such as pallets and crates represent a significant capital investment, and shrinkage rates without tracking can reach 15 to 20 percent annually. With RFID, operators know exactly which containers left a facility, which ones came back and which are overdue. Automated alerts flag missing items before they become write-offs, and data patterns reveal problem locations or partners with consistently poor return rates.</p>
<p>Wash-cycle monitoring is another area where RFID delivers clear results. Food-grade reusable containers must be cleaned to strict hygiene standards, and regulations often require proof that each item has been properly sanitised before reuse. RFID tags survive commercial dishwashing and industrial cleaning processes, allowing automated logging of every wash cycle a container passes through. If a container has not been cleaned within the required timeframe, the system flags it and prevents it from re-entering circulation.</p>

<p>The standout feature of the EDGE Line is its ultra-slim form factor. At only 6mm thick, these RAIN RFID antennas do away with the traditional bulky housing that has long been a hallmark of industrial UHF RFID antenna design. Despite ditching the enclosure, Kathrein has maintained an IP54 protection rating across the range, meaning the antennas can handle exposure to dust and splashing water without issue. That makes them viable for both indoor warehouse environments and outdoor logistics yards where weather resistance matters.</p>
<p>The antenna family includes two wide-range versions, giving integrators flexibility depending on read zone requirements. Each unit features a TNC antenna socket mounted on the rear, keeping cable connections tidy and out of the way during installation. The housing-free design also simplifies mounting, allowing the antennas to be integrated flush against surfaces or embedded into existing infrastructure with minimal visual impact.</p>
<p>Sustainability is another thread running through the EDGE Line&#8217;s development. Kathrein says the antennas are manufactured using 30% recycled materials, a meaningful step for a sector that has historically paid little attention to the environmental footprint of its hardware. As more organisations face pressure to demonstrate sustainable supply chain practices, choosing RFID infrastructure with a lower material impact could become a differentiator.</p>
<p>The decision to strip back to a housing-free design reflects a broader trend in RFID hardware development. System integrators and end users are increasingly looking for components that can be deployed in tight spaces, whether that is on conveyor systems, inside retail fixtures, or at dock doors where bulky equipment creates obstructions. The EDGE Line addresses this demand without sacrificing the durability that industrial RFID deployments require.</p>

Products move through supply chains, into the hands of consumers, and then into waste streams with little visibility into what they are made of, where they have been, or how they should be handled at end of life. RFID technology is quickly becoming the connective tissue that holds circular product lifecycles together.</p>
<p>At the heart of this shift is the digital product passport, or DPP. Driven largely by EU regulatory requirements, DPPs create a persistent digital identity for physical products. Each item carries a unique identifier, typically encoded on a UHF RFID tag or NFC chip, that links to a rich dataset covering material composition, manufacturing origin, repair history, and recycling instructions. Unlike a barcode that only identifies a product type, RFID-enabled passports identify the individual item and follow it from factory floor to recycling facility.</p>
<p>Material identification is where RFID proves especially valuable for recycling operations. When a garment or electronic device arrives at a sorting facility, its embedded tag can be read automatically and at speed, even without line of sight. The associated data tells operators exactly what materials are present, whether certain components need special handling, and which recycling stream the item belongs in. This is a significant step up from manual sorting, which is slow, error-prone, and often results in recyclable materials ending up in landfill simply because they could not be identified in time.</p>
<p>Reuse tracking adds another dimension. RFID tags persist through multiple ownership cycles, meaning a product that is resold, donated, or refurbished can carry its full history forward. A secondhand electronics retailer can scan an incoming device and instantly access its service record. A fashion resale platform can verify the authenticity and provenance of a pre-owned item. Each transaction gets logged against the product passport, building a richer picture over time and giving consumers genuine transparency about what they are buying.</p>
<p>Extended producer responsibility, or EPR, legislation is accelerating adoption. Under EPR frameworks, manufacturers bear financial and operational responsibility for their products after the consumer is finished with them. RFID provides the audit trail that makes compliance practical. Brands can demonstrate how many of their products were collected, what proportion were recycled versus sent to landfill, and where gaps exist in their recovery networks. Without item-level tracking, these obligations would be nearly impossible to meet at scale.</p>
<p>The EU is the primary regulatory engine here. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which began rolling out sector by sector from 2025, mandates digital product passports for categories including textiles, batteries, and electronics. The regulation specifies that product information must be accessible via a data carrier on the product itself, and RFID fits that requirement neatly. UHF RAIN RFID handles high-volume logistics and sorting scenarios, while NFC enables consumer-facing interactions through a simple smartphone tap.</p>
<p>Several pilot programmes are already demonstrating what this looks like in practice. Fashion brands are embedding UHF tags in garment care labels that link to material composition data and local recycling options. Battery manufacturers are using RFID to track cells through production, use, and collection for second-life applications in energy storage. Electronics producers are tagging components to streamline disassembly and recovery of valuable rare earth metals.</p>
<p>The infrastructure challenge remains real. Recycling facilities need RFID readers installed at intake points. Data platforms must be interoperable so that a passport created by one manufacturer can be read by any authorised party downstream. Standards bodies including GS1 and ISO are working to define common data structures and communication protocols, but industry-wide alignment is still a work in progress.</p>
<p>What is clear is that the circular economy cannot function on good intentions alone. It needs data, and it needs that data attached to the product itself. RFID delivers exactly that, turning every tagged item into a node in a transparent, traceable, and accountable product lifecycle. <p>OEKO-TEX® is one of the most widely recognised independent testing and certification systems for textiles worldwide. Achieving this standard means that RZX&#8217;s laundry tags have been tested against a comprehensive catalogue of regulated and non-regulated chemicals, meeting strict thresholds for substances that could pose a risk to human health or the environment.</p>
<p>For industries that rely heavily on textile tracking, this certification removes a key concern. Hospitals, hotels, commercial laundries, and sports facilities all use RFID-tagged linens and uniforms in high volumes. Workers and patients come into prolonged contact with these textiles, so knowing that the embedded RFID tag meets international safety benchmarks provides genuine reassurance.</p>
<p>The RAIN Alliance highlighted the certification in a recent announcement, noting the growing importance of chemical safety compliance as RFID adoption expands across the textile supply chain. <p>On the technical side, RZX&#8217;s laundry tags are built to handle the demands of industrial textile management. They can withstand more than 200 wash cycles, tolerate pressures up to 60 bar, and resist temperatures reaching 200 degrees Celsius. Installation options include stitching, heat sealing, pouching, and hanging, giving laundry operators flexibility depending on the garment type. The tags also support data printing and encoding, and RZX reports a production capacity of up to 3 million tags per month.</p>
<p>Multiple sizes and form factors are available, which matters when you consider the range of textiles being tracked. A hotel towel, a hospital gown, and an industrial uniform all have different physical requirements, and a one-size-fits-all tag simply does not work in practice.</p>

Ma Balise, the Belgian distributor behind the Ephem smart label brand, has received a Jury Special Mention at the Avant-garde Awards during Packaging Première Milano 2026 in the Innovative Materials category.</p>
<p>The recognition was unplanned. Faced with seven finalists in the most competitive category of the evening, the jury decided to create an additional prize specifically for Ephem. That kind of spontaneous distinction says something about where the industry&#8217;s attention is heading.</p>
<p>Ephem labels tackle a problem that most connected packaging overlooks entirely. Brands invest heavily in sustainable materials, recycled substrates, and plant-based inks, only to attach a conventional NFC or UHF RFID inlay built from multiple layers of plastic and metal. Those inlays can persist in landfill for a century or more. Ephem replaces the typical seven-layer plastic construction with a four-layer architecture using FSC-certified paper, a conductive ink antenna, adhesive, and a release liner. There is no PVC, no PET, and no chemical etching involved.</p>
<p>The result is a fully functional NFC or UHF RFID label that delivers the same read range and chip compatibility as its conventional counterpart, but is certified compostable within 90 days by DIN CERTCO and TUV Rheinland. It is also recyclable in standard paper streams, verified by PTS Paper.</p>
<p>Milan is the third major European event to spotlight the technology in under a year. Ephem won the LuxePack in Green Award 2025 in Monaco on its very first entry, then reached the finals at the Cosmetic 360 Awards 2025 in Paris. Three events, three signals, all pointing toward growing industry demand for sustainable smart labelling.</p>
<p>The timing aligns with regulatory pressure building across Europe. The EU Digital Product Passport regulation takes effect in 2027, making connected labels mandatory for cosmetics brands. That obligation will drive massive adoption of RFID and NFC inlays. The question is whether brands will default to the cheapest plastic chip available or choose a material that matches the sustainability credentials of the rest of their packaging.</p>
<p>Philippe Henin, founder of Ma Balise, put it simply: brands spend years making their packaging irreproachable, then compromise it all with a plastic chip nobody questions. Ephem exists to close that gap.</p>
<p>For brands preparing for the Digital Product Passport mandate, Ephem offers a route to compliance that does not undermine their environmental commitments. The results show near-perfect sorting accuracy, labour reductions of up to 99.9%, and an economic case strong enough to offset the cost of implementation.</p>
<p>ReCircled, headquartered in Denver, Colorado, designs and runs circular programs for apparel and footwear brands. The company takes in end-of-life garments, breaks them down by removing components like buttons and zippers, and processes the fabric into raw fibres for reuse. As demand for these services grows, the manual identification and sorting of incoming items has become a significant bottleneck, slowing throughput and introducing errors that reduce the value recovered from each batch.</p>
<p>To address this, ReCircled partnered with Avery Dennison to run a side-by-side comparison of manual sorting against an RFID-enabled workflow. The solution combined Avery Dennison&#8217;s embedded UHF RFID sensor technology, compatible RFID hardware, and the atma.io connected product cloud platform. Together, these components assign a unique digital identity to each garment, allowing automated capture of product data throughout the item&#8217;s lifecycle.</p>
<p>The pilot involved two major global apparel brands, and the efficiency gains were striking. For one brand, RFID scanning reduced the labour hours needed for product identification by 95.9%. For the other, the reduction was 99.9%. At the same time, accuracy jumped to 99% across the board, compared to manual accuracy rates of just 89% and 72% for the two brands respectively.</p>
<p>Beyond speed and accuracy, the RFID system captured richer data for every garment, including Electronic Product Codes (EPC) and material weight information. This additional detail proved particularly valuable for external reporting and for unlocking revenue streams that manual processes cannot efficiently support. One key example is Duty Drawback compensation, where brands can reclaim duties on damaged or unsold goods returned for recycling. With RFID, individual items can be tracked and documented at a fraction of the traditional labour cost, making single-item Duty Drawback claims practical for the first time.</p>
<p>The economic conclusions were clear. The savings from faster, more accurate processing, combined with newly accessible value streams like Duty Drawback, were enough to more than offset the initial investment in RFID infrastructure. For brands already tagging products at the point of manufacture, the incremental cost of enabling circular sorting is minimal.</p>
<p>Scott Kuhlman, CEO of ReCircled, said the technology is already reshaping operations: &#8220;RFID allows us to instantly identify hundreds of items, minimising manual labour, reducing errors, and is the key to unlocking full automation.&#8221;</p>
<p>The remaining challenge is adoption at scale. For RFID-enabled circularity to reach its full potential, brands need to embed digital identities into garments at the point of manufacture. That foundational step ensures every product is equipped for sorting, recycling, resale, or other end-of-life pathways from day one.</p>

<p>The strongest sustainability argument for RFID centres on the efficiency gains it delivers across supply chains. Passive UHF RFID tags, particularly RAIN RFID, allow organisations to track inventory in real time without line-of-sight scanning. This translates directly into fewer wasted shipments, reduced overproduction, and optimised routing. In retail alone, RFID-driven inventory accuracy improvements from around 65% to above 95% mean fewer emergency restocking runs and less unsold merchandise heading to landfill.</p>
<p>In logistics, RFID-enabled visibility reduces fuel consumption by eliminating redundant transport legs. Warehouse operations that adopt RFID often report significant reductions in energy use, as automated scanning replaces labour-intensive manual counts that keep facilities running longer than necessary. Across cold chain applications, RFID temperature sensors help prevent spoilage, cutting food waste and the associated carbon emissions from producing goods that never reach consumers.</p>
<p>These are measurable, well-documented benefits. The cumulative effect of deploying RFID at scale across global supply chains represents a meaningful reduction in greenhouse gas output, even if precise figures vary by industry and implementation.</p>
<p><strong>Tag Recyclability: A Genuine Challenge</strong></p>
<p>The less comfortable truth is that RFID tags themselves present a real environmental problem. A typical passive RFID inlay consists of a silicon chip bonded to an aluminium or copper antenna, mounted on a PET or polyester substrate. These materials are technically recyclable in isolation, but in practice, their composite construction makes separation difficult and economically unattractive at scale.</p>
<p>When RFID tags are embedded in garment labels, cardboard packaging, or product containers, they frequently contaminate existing recycling streams. Paper recyclers have flagged RFID inlays as a source of contamination that can damage processing equipment. In textile recycling, embedded tags complicate fibre recovery. The vast majority of the billions of RFID tags produced annually still end up in landfill or mixed waste streams.</p>

<p>A proper lifecycle analysis (LCA) of RFID deployment must account for raw material extraction, semiconductor fabrication, tag manufacturing, distribution, use phase benefits, and end-of-life disposal. The fabrication of silicon chips is energy-intensive, involving cleanroom facilities, chemical processing, and significant water consumption. These upstream costs are real and should not be dismissed.</p>
<p>However, most published LCA studies conclude that the operational benefits of RFID outweigh the manufacturing footprint, provided the tags are deployed in applications where they genuinely improve efficiency. A tag that prevents the unnecessary transport of tonnes of goods across a continent delivers a net carbon benefit many times greater than its own production footprint. The equation becomes less favourable for single-use tags in low-value applications where the efficiency gains are marginal.</p>

<p>RFID is not inherently green, and it is not inherently wasteful. Its sustainability impact depends entirely on how and where it is deployed. The technology delivers clear environmental benefits when it reduces waste, cuts transport emissions, and extends product lifecycles through better tracking. It creates genuine environmental costs through tag production and disposal, particularly at the scale the industry now operates.</p>
<p>The RFID industry needs to take recyclability more seriously. Voluntary commitments to eco-friendly tag design are not enough when billions of units ship each year. Standards bodies, retailers, and tag manufacturers must collaborate on practical recycling solutions and design-for-disassembly principles.
