The Mainzer Weinmarkt, the largest wine festival in the Rhine-Hesse region and an eight-day fixture in the Mainz Stadtpark in western Germany, ran its 2026 edition entirely on reusable dishware with a radio frequency identification chip built into every plate and bowl. It ran across two weekends, 27 to 30 August and 3 to 6 September 2026, and mainzplus GmbH, the city’s events and venue operator that organises it, reported roughly 310,000 visitors in its wrap-up of 7 September 2026.
Eight automated deposit return stations were placed along the paths through the Stadtpark, next to the bins. A guest paid a refundable deposit when buying food served on a reusable dish, then fed the dish into a machine. The machine identified the item, checked whether that particular dish had already been refunded, and paid the deposit back either through a cash slot or straight onto a card. Returned items were sorted automatically and sent to a central washing facility rather than being washed by the stall that served them.
Which figures belong to which event
Two sets of numbers are circulating for this pilot and they describe different events. The smaller set comes from the test run. At the Mainzer WeinUfer in May 2026, an event with more than 70,000 visitors, the system avoided 10,000 single-use containers and prevented around one tonne of waste, and mainzplus reported that it worked with every food vendor on site simultaneously. Those are WeinUfer test figures, not Weinmarkt figures, although some secondary coverage has presented them as Weinmarkt results.
For the Weinmarkt, mainzplus projected up to 50,000 single-use containers avoided and up to five tonnes of waste prevented across the eight days, against an expected attendance of up to 300,000. Its post-event release of 7 September 2026 confirmed the higher actual attendance of about 310,000 and said the system worked very well over both weekends, but it did not publish a final container count or tonnage. Until those land, 50,000 and five tonnes remain projections rather than results.
What the RFID does here, and what has not been stated
Each dish carries an RFID chip that the return machine reads without physical contact and without any power source in the dish itself. That is a description of a passive transponder in plain language rather than a technical specification, and it is as far as the public material goes. Neither mainzplus nor its partners have stated the operating frequency, the tag format or the read method used at the return stations, so anyone benchmarking this against their own scheme should treat the air interface as unknown rather than assume it matches theirs.
What the chip enables is item-level history rather than a simple deposit token. Rent.Group AG, the event rental group that manages the circular process, material provisioning and reprocessing, uses it to follow each dish from the vendor who served food on it, through the return machine, into the wash house and back out to the stalls. Automatic sorting at the machine is what allows vendors to drop dishwashing altogether: no washing-up station, no water connection and no staff at the sink, which is a significant change to how a food pitch at a large festival is set up.
The tracking estate behind the rental fleet
Rent.Group’s RFID systems are supplied by RFID Konsortium GmbH, a German integrator that builds RFID track-and-trace for the event and rental sector. Its published account of the Rent.Group project is considerably more technical than any of the festival coverage. It describes track and trace across roughly 7 million rental items, with the goal of supplying more than 100,000 events a year in the event, trade fair and office markets and keeping about 4,500 distinct products available where and when they are needed.
Rather than standardise on a single label, RFID Konsortium specified a deliberate mix of textile transponders, on-metal tags and conventional transponders, matched to what each item is made of. Reading is gate-led. RF KonSys gates at the loading docks reconcile a whole consignment against its order within a few seconds, confirming the load automatically and giving the operator a green light, with handling unit labels applied to the load carriers so a trolley or pallet can be located anywhere in the warehouse. Handhelds, RFID workstations and RFID printers fill in around the gates, and the software modules cover warehouse management, inventory, picking, loading, delivery, retrieval, unloading, cleaning, VDE testing, replenishment and maintenance, with electronic delivery notes replacing paper.
That leaves an open question worth asking of any scheme like this. Are the Weinmarkt dishes simply another tag population inside that existing estate, read by the same gates at the loading dock and wash house, or is this a separate scheme built for the pilot with the eight return machines as effectively its only read points? Neither company has said, and the answer changes the economics substantially. Extending an estate that already reads 7 million items is a very different proposition from standing up a closed loop for one festival.
Who built what
CircleCube designed the modular deposit return machines, and its co-founder Florian Bluemer argues that automating the return removes queueing, which he frames as one of the practical barriers to circular systems being adopted at all. Koziol, the German houseware manufacturer, produced the plates and bowls in biocircular plastics. Rent.Group chief executive Christian Eichenberger positioned the pilot as part of a shift away from twentieth-century linear consumption towards reuse. Katja Mailahn, chief executive of mainzplus, made the operational case: reusables become standard practice when they save resources and simplify the event at the same time.
Logging each item through its wash cycle by RFID is becoming a recognisable pattern in reusable container schemes rather than a one-off. A comparable approach is running in South Korea, where Cheonan opened an AI-inspected reusable delivery container centre that records every cycle against the individual container. mainzplus has said it intends to extend the system to further events it runs, starting with the Mainzer WinterZeit markets. Those are a useful next test, because a winter market spread across several city-centre squares is a harder placement problem for eight fixed return machines than a single park with defined paths.
