This week in RFID
Welcome to the first regular Thursday edition of the RFID News weekly roundup. From now on, this lands every Thursday at 9am: the last seven days of RFID, NFC and auto-ID news in one place, the case studies, the hardware launches and the deals, with none of the filler.
You're one of our founding readers, which means you were here before this was a habit. Thank you. If a colleague should be reading it too, forward this on; they can join at rfidnews.co.uk/newsletter.
And this email is not a one-way street: hit reply with anything you'd like us to cover, chase or explain. I read every response.

The National Lacrosse League (NLL) has named YinzCam, Inc. as its Official Digital Engine in a league-wide partnership that will see embedded NFC technology built into every NLL player jersey, turning match kit into a tap point between the arena floor and the league’s digital platform. NFC goes into the jersey The connected jersey element is the part of the announcement that matters most to the RFID and NFC industry. Under the agreement, every NLL […]

NXP Semiconductors has confirmed that its Trimension NCJ29D6 ultra-wideband family will be deployed across the BMW Group fleet, starting with selected 2026 vehicle programmes. The same UWB silicon handles two jobs: BMW’s Digital Key Plus, which turns a smartphone or smart watch into a hands-free digital car key, and in-cabin presence detection, which uses the radio to flag a child or pet left behind in a parked car. The announcement, made from Eindhoven on 4 […]

Chainway has announced the MC80, a 5G enterprise handheld that the company bills as one of the first Android 16 terminals to run on Qualcomm’s Dragonwing Q-6690 processor. The Shenzhen manufacturer is not the only vendor lining up behind that chip, but the MC80 is an early look at what it makes possible in a real product. The interesting part is not the Android version. It is where the RFID radio now lives. Until now, […]

Impinj has issued firmware version 10.4 for its R700 series RAIN RFID readers. On paper it is a modest point release, but it clears two of the more tedious obstacles integrators hit in the field: finding a USB Wi-Fi dongle the reader will actually accept, and persuading a browser to talk to a reader directly. More Wi-Fi dongle choice for awkward installations The R700 has no onboard wireless radio. Wi-Fi is added through a USB […]

STAR Systems International is powering a string of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling deployments across India, bringing barrier-free electronic toll collection to some of the country’s busiest highway corridors. The company confirmed its involvement in several MLFF projects spanning four Indian states, including the high-profile Delhi-Jaipur Pink City Expressway in Rajasthan. MLFF tolling eliminates conventional toll plazas entirely, allowing vehicles to travel at full highway speed while UHF RFID-based systems automatically identify each vehicle and […]

When RFID technology meets public policy without public buy-in, the result is predictable. Over 100 motorcyclists took to the streets of Puebla, Mexico on Tuesday to protest against the “Ley Casco” (Helmet Law), a regulation that mandates RFID-tagged stickers on motorcycle helmets. Their message was unambiguous: technology imposed without consultation breeds resistance, not compliance. The demonstrators marched through the state capital wearing red scarves and cords as symbols of protest. Signs reading “No to the […]
