What the rule requires

Brings tyres into the digital product passport. Embedded RAIN RFID tyre tags, already standardised, are the obvious carrier candidate.

Status: In preparation under the 2025 to 2030 working plan

What it means for RFID

Tyres are a product group where RFID is already in use ahead of any regulation. RFID News reported in October 2026 that Michelin has embedded passive UHF tags, read in the 860 to 960 MHz band and branded RAIN RFID, in production tyres for about a decade, and that Hana RFID has supplied over 250 million tyre tags. Murata licensed Michelin's fourth-generation tag design for mass production from January 2025.

The shared data layer is also forming. ISO 20910 gave tyre tags a common numbering scheme in 2019, and the Global Data Service Organization for Tires and Automotive Components (GDSO), founded by Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear and Pirelli, signed a memorandum of understanding with the RAIN Alliance on 12 February 2026.

The delegated act is expected in 2027, and the obligation would fall on tyre makers and importers. Until it is adopted the carrier remains open, so tag makers and tyre manufacturers should watch whether the act names RFID.
