What the rule requires
Brands, importers and online sellers will pay for collecting, sorting and recycling clothing, footwear and household textiles. Fees are expected to vary by product, and per-item data on fibre and origin makes sorting cheaper, which favours tags already on garments.
Status: In force; member states must transpose by 17 Jun 2027
What it means for RFID
The textile EPR rules do not require RFID or any identifier. The link to RFID is cost: fees are expected to vary by product, and per-item data on fibre and origin makes sorting cheaper, which favours garments that already carry a tag.
The obligation falls on producers, importers and online sellers of clothing, footwear and household textiles, who will pay for collecting, sorting and recycling.
The dates to watch are 17 June 2027, when member states must transpose the directive, and 17 April 2028, when producer responsibility schemes for textiles must be running.
