Premier League digital ticketing mandate and NFC entry

Premier League clubs must issue season and match tickets digitally by default, with anti-touting features such as hidden or rotating barcodes; newly promoted clubs get two years. NFC is not required, but many clubs have chosen NFC wallet passes for tap entry, so turnstile readers and mobile wallet integration are where the spend goes.

The mandate requires digital tickets, not NFC, but RFID News reported in August 2026 that at least fifteen clubs have chosen NFC wallet passes for tap entry. These work at 13.56 MHz HF: the phone presents a credential from Apple Wallet or Google Wallet to the turnstile reader, and there is no barcode image to screenshot and resell.

The spend falls on clubs, in turnstile readers and wallet integration. Manchester City and Crystal Palace use VTAP readers from Dot Origin, and Tottenham Hotspur, working with FortressGB, is removing QR codes from its tickets for 2026/27 so that every fan taps.

Digital tickets are mandatory for all existing clubs from the 2026/27 season, and newly promoted clubs get two years. RFID News noted that for a promoted club, moving to tap entry can mean retrofitting reader heads in every turnstile lane.
