What the rule requires

Status: Phasing in by state; most states fully implemented by 1 Jan 2027

What it means for RFID

Australia's rule is a low-frequency (LF) RFID mandate: every sheep and goat needs an electronic ear tag, read at saleyards and abattoirs into the national NLIS database. Keepers buy and fit the LF ear tags, and saleyards and abattoirs need LF readers where animals are sold and processed.

The requirement has been phasing in state by state since 1 January 2025, set by state governments under the national plan. Most states are due to be fully implemented by 1 January 2027, which makes it one of the largest livestock RFID rollouts anywhere.

The date to watch is 1 January 2027. Tag and reader suppliers selling into Australia should check each state's arrangements against the Integrity Systems guidance.

Timeline

  1. Mandatory individual electronic ID begins, phased by state
  2. Full implementation in most states
