What the rule requires
This builds on the ISO/IEC 18000-63 UHF air interface (the basis of RAIN RFID). It gives each battery-free sensor tag its own sub-channel so it can stream data such as vibration, strain or temperature continuously, rather than being read one at a time. It is aimed at predictive maintenance and lets readers and sensor tags from different makers work together.

What it means for RFID
ISO/IEC 18000-65 extends the ISO/IEC 18000-63 UHF air interface, the basis of RAIN RFID, from identification to continuous sensing. Instead of a reader collecting tags one at a time, each battery-free sensor tag gets its own sub-channel and can stream readings such as vibration, strain or temperature.
That matters most to sensor tag makers and reader makers, who now have a common specification to build to, so readers and sensor tags from different makers can work together. For integrators and equipment operators, the stated target is predictive maintenance.
The standard was proposed by Japan to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 31/WG 4 in May 2023 and published in February 2026. The published details come from Panasonic, a co-developer.
