What the rule requires
Long-lived goods that are repaired and resold, which suits a tag embedded at manufacture that survives the product's whole life.
Status: Planned under the 2025 to 2030 working plan
What it means for RFID
Furniture is on the European Commission's 2025 to 2030 working plan for new ESPR product rules, with a delegated act for the sector expected in 2028. The rule requires an identifier but leaves the technology open, so RFID or NFC would be one way of meeting it rather than a requirement.
The obligation would fall on furniture makers and importers. Because furniture is long-lived, repaired and resold, a carrier fitted at manufacture would need to survive the product's whole life, which favours a tag embedded in the item.
The rule is planned, not adopted, and the date to watch is 2028. Until the delegated act is published, the sources do not say which tag type or frequency would be used.
