What the rule requires
Kroger is using RFID labels, applied in store, in its bakery department in about 1,500 stores and plans to reach more than 2,300 stores by 2029, with talk of more fresh categories. No supplier tagging requirement has been announced, but label and reader vendors serving fresh food should watch it.
Status: Store rollout under way; not a supplier mandate
What it means for RFID
Kroger's programme is a retailer deployment, not a supplier mandate. The labels are applied in store, so the demand today is for labels and reading in Kroger's own bakery departments rather than for source tagging by food suppliers.
RFID News reported in October 2026 that Kroger runs about 2,700 supermarkets, so more than 2,300 stores by 2029 would cover most of the estate, which on the evidence presented makes it the largest fresh food RFID deployment in US grocery that we know of. Its 20 October 2026 investor deck claimed around 70 per cent faster inventory counts and around 50 per cent lower waste costs in one department, though it credited the connected store as a whole rather than RFID alone.
Kroger has not named a frequency, standard, inlay or tag vendor. The things to watch are which fresh categories follow bakery, any supplier tagging request, and progress towards the 2029 target.
