What the rule requires

In California and other Metrc states, licensees must use state-issued UID tags bought through the regulator; California's package tags are RFID-enabled. What it means for RFID

In California and other Metrc states, licensees must use state-issued UID tags bought through the regulator, and California's package tags are RFID-enabled. Tag demand in this sector is therefore set by state rules and supplied through the regulator.

RFID News reported in August 2026 that Perfect Union Northside in Sacramento was the first California dispensary to receive Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) approval for RFID self-checkout, using the EXO platform with UHF tags and integrating with Metrc and the Treez point-of-sale system.

The direction of travel is mixed. California's comment period on group plant tagging closed on 2 October 2026, Colorado extended its Metrc contract through 2029, and Colorado and Oklahoma have changed rule wording to allow non-RFID options in future.
