New RFID Implementations, Hardware and Tags

Perfect Union Northside in Sacramento has made history as the first cannabis dispensary in California to receive approval from the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) for RFID-powered self-checkout technology. The announcement, made by MWG Holdings Group on July 28, 2026, marks a significant milestone for both the cannabis industry and RFID retail adoption.

The dispensary is now using the EXO RFID retail platform, which relies on UHF RFID tags to identify multiple products simultaneously at the point of sale. Unlike traditional barcode scanning, where each item must be handled individually, the RFID system reads all tagged products in a single moment. This speeds up the checkout process considerably and reduces the friction that has long been part of the dispensary shopping experience.

What makes this deployment particularly noteworthy is the regulatory dimension. California’s cannabis industry operates under strict compliance requirements, with every product tracked through Metrc, the state’s official track-and-trace system. The EXO platform integrates directly with both Metrc and the dispensary’s Treez point-of-sale system, ensuring that each transaction is logged accurately and in real time. Getting DCC approval for a self-checkout system in this tightly regulated space required demonstrating that the technology could maintain full compliance without a staff member handling every scan.

MWG Holdings Group CEO Tom Sheridan framed the move as part of a broader push to modernize cannabis retail. “Cannabis retail is maturing fast, and we intend to lead that shift,” Sheridan said. The company operates Perfect Union, which ranks among California’s top five cannabis retail chains, along with Wild Seed Wellness.

The technology partnership behind the deployment brings together three companies. EXO provides the RFID retail platform, Treez handles the point-of-sale integration, and Riot Insight contributes additional operational capabilities. Together, they have built a system that goes well beyond simple checkout automation.

Jon Heard from EXO highlighted the multi-functional nature of the solution, noting that it “streamlines compliance while providing self-checkout, loss prevention, and inventory management in a single solution.” The RFID infrastructure gives dispensary staff real-time visibility into inventory levels, simplifies stock counting, and adds a layer of security through automated tracking of every tagged item.

For the broader RFID industry, this deployment is a compelling proof point. Cannabis dispensaries face some of the most demanding regulatory and security requirements in retail, which makes them an ideal testing ground for RFID technology. If the system can satisfy DCC compliance standards while also improving the customer experience, it sends a strong signal to other highly regulated retail sectors.

The move also reflects a growing trend in cannabis retail toward adopting technologies that are already well established in mainstream retail environments. Self-checkout kiosks, RFID inventory management, and automated compliance reporting are common in grocery, apparel, and pharmacy settings. Cannabis has been slower to adopt these tools, partly due to regulatory uncertainty, but approvals like this one could accelerate the shift.

As more states legalize cannabis and the industry continues to mature, RFID-powered solutions are set to play an increasingly central role in how dispensaries operate. The Perfect Union deployment in Sacramento is just the beginning.
