New RFID Implementations, Hardware and Tags

Retail shrinkage costs the industry tens of billions of dollars every year. For decades, the standard response has been Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS): those hard tags and soft labels that trigger an alarm if someone walks out without paying. EAS works on a simple principle. A tag is attached to merchandise, and if it is not deactivated at the point of sale, it sets off a detector at the exit. It is a deterrent, not a data system. And that distinction matters more than most retailers realise.

RFID-based loss prevention takes a fundamentally different approach. Rather than simply triggering an alarm, UHF RFID tags give each item a unique identity. That identity can be tracked from the moment goods arrive at the back door to the moment they leave through the front. The shift from EAS to RFID is not just a technology upgrade. It is a move from reactive to proactive loss prevention.

Source tagging is a key part of this shift. When RFID tags are applied at the point of manufacture or packing, retailers receive items that are already serialised and enrolled in the inventory system before they even reach the sales floor. This closes a gap that EAS never addressed: shrinkage that occurs in transit, in the stockroom, or during receiving. If a case of 24 items arrives and only 22 are scanned into the system, the discrepancy is flagged immediately rather than surfacing as a mystery write-off months later.

Real-time shrinkage analytics represent one of the most significant practical benefits. RFID readers deployed across the sales floor, fitting rooms, and stockroom create a continuous picture of where inventory is and where it is not. If a high-value item disappears from a shelf without a corresponding point-of-sale transaction, that anomaly is visible in near real time. Loss prevention teams can investigate quickly, before the trail goes cold. Traditional EAS generates no data at all once an alarm is either triggered or not. RFID generates a timestamped audit trail for every item.

Self-checkout is an area where RFID advantages are particularly clear. Ticket switching, skip scanning, and sweethearting are all difficult to catch with EAS because the tag is often deactivated regardless of whether the correct item was paid for. RFID-enabled self-checkout can verify that the items scanned by the customer match the RFID reads captured at the checkout station. If a customer scans a low-cost item but places a high-cost item in the bagging area, the system can flag the mismatch. Some deployments go further, reading all items in the basket simultaneously before the transaction completes.

There are practical challenges. RFID tags cost more than standard EAS labels, and not every category justifies the investment at item level. Metal and liquid-heavy products still present RF absorption and detuning issues that require careful tag selection. And the data infrastructure needed to act on real-time shrinkage alerts requires integration with inventory management and loss prevention platforms.

But the direction of travel is clear. EAS tells you something left the store it should not have. RFID tells you what it was, when it happened, where it had been, and often enough context to understand how the loss occurred. For retailers serious about shrinkage, that difference is the whole point.
