What the rule requires
Cattle and bison already need approved RFID ear tags in Canada, and the revised plan adds no new movement reporting for them. The changes still coming would extend ID and reporting to goats and farmed cervids, add sheep slaughter and export reporting, and cut abattoir reporting to 7 days, but CFIA has given no publication or start date.
Status: Proposed; cattle and bison movement reporting dropped June 2026; rest awaiting final publication, no date
What it means for RFID
Canada already requires approved RFID ear tags for cattle and bison, and the technology in this rule is low-frequency (LF) RFID. The revised plan adds no new movement reporting for cattle and bison, so the existing tag requirement for them continues as before.
The changes still coming would extend identification and reporting to goats and farmed cervids, add sheep slaughter and export reporting, and cut abattoir reporting to 7 days. For tag suppliers the new volume would come from goats and cervids, while the faster reporting falls on abattoirs.
CFIA paused publication in January 2026 and revised the package on 2 June 2026. It has given no publication or start date, so there is no milestone to plan against yet.
