Tracker entry M57: China: 900 MHz RFID radio rules (920 to 925 MHz)
- Region
- Asia Pacific
- Sector
- Spectrum
- Imposed by
- MIIT
- Applies to
- All RAIN RFID readers in China
- Technology
- RFID specific
What the rule requires
UHF RFID readers sold or used in China must operate in 920 to 925 MHz (up to 2 W ERP in 920.5 to 924.5 MHz) and hold SRRC type approval, but no radio station licence is needed. Readers already approved for 840 to 845 MHz may be sold and used until scrapped; installations within 33 m of a railway track centre line need railway regulator consent.
Status: In force since 1 Nov 2024; 840 to 845 MHz band closed to new approvals
What it means for RFID
China's rules fix where RAIN RFID readers can operate: 920 to 925 MHz, with up to 2 W ERP in 920.5 to 924.5 MHz. Every UHF reader sold or used in China needs SRRC type approval, though no radio station licence is required, so type approval is the main hurdle for anyone bringing a reader to the Chinese market.
Since 1 November 2024 no new type approvals have been issued for 840 to 845 MHz. Readers already approved for that band may be sold and used until scrapped, but new designs for China have to target 920 to 925 MHz.
Integrators should note one site rule: installations within 33 m of a railway track centre line need the railway regulator's consent.
Timeline
- Trial 800/900 MHz RFID rules (No. 205 of 2007) issued, now repealed
- MIIT issues 900 MHz RFID radio management rules (Gongxinbuwu [2024] No. 76)
- New rules in force; 2007 rules repealed; no new type approvals for 840 to 845 MHz
