What the rule requires
A state-run campaign places a passive electronic identifier in the rumen of 300,000 cattle, read with a handheld reader that shows the animal and its registered owner, to deter and trace theft. It is a government programme rather than a rule on buyers; the frequency is not published (cattle boluses are usually 134.2 kHz ISO 11784/11785, unconfirmed here).
Status: Government campaign launched 19 Sep 2026; not stated to be compulsory
What it means for RFID
Burkina Faso's campaign uses a passive electronic identifier placed in the animal's rumen, read with a handheld reader that brings up the animal and its registered owner. RFID News reported in October 2026 that no device, manufacturer, standard or frequency has been published, so the tag type and band are not confirmed.
The design suits a theft problem: as we noted, an ear tag can be cut out in seconds, while an identifier inside the animal cannot be removed from a live animal. Because the identifier is passive and confirms identity only when a reader is present, its value depends on readers being where stolen cattle surface, such as markets, checkpoints and abattoirs.
At 300,000 cattle this is a state-run campaign at scale, not stated to be compulsory. The government has put more than 2 billion FCFA behind it and three other campaigns, including vaccination, with no breakdown by activity.
