NuboMed has taken its RFID-based hospital supply automation system into South Korea, launching the Intelligent Closed-Loop Medical Supply Management System (ICMSMS) there through the local distributor Glad Alliance. The launch was reported on 21 August 2026 by the Korean pharmacy trade title Rapportian. ICMSMS is a range of sensor-equipped storage cabinets and management software covering pharmaceuticals and medical consumables from goods-in and storage through use, return and billing.

NuboMed is a smart hospital systems supplier founded in Shenzhen in 2012 and now headquartered in Newport Beach, California, with offices in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Singapore, Riyadh and Rouillon in France. The company says it supplies more than 3,000 medical institutions across more than 10 countries and regions, with over 100,000 smart devices deployed and 48 issued patents. Glad Alliance, headed by chief executive Yoon Jung-kwon, is its Korean channel partner.

What was launched in Korea

Two cabinet models were named at the launch: the M3100-C1, a single-column smart pharmaceutical management counter, and the M3100-C2, a two-column version of the same design. Both carry a touchscreen, a fingerprint reader, an RFID card reader and a barcode scanner, and some variants add facial recognition that still works when the user is wearing a surgical mask. Cabinets in the range include cold chain compartments held at 2 to 8 degrees C, and NuboMed puts identification of a complete surgical kit at roughly three seconds.

The dedicated RFID unit in the family is the H3000-Ri Medical Supply Management Cabinet, which measures 710 x 667 x 1937 mm and runs an Intel Core i5 with 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage inside the cabinet itself, so tag reads and access decisions are processed locally rather than at a central server. NuboMed also sells a walk-in version, marketed as the Medical Supply RFID Room, which applies the approach to an entire store rather than a single cupboard.

Tiering the auto-ID by what the item is worth

The part worth studying is not the cabinet, it is which identification technology goes on which item. ICMSMS does not put RFID on everything. It combines UHF RFID, weight sensing, barcode and biometric authentication, and the split between them follows item value.

UHF RFID goes on the expensive stock: orthopaedic implants, interventional devices, pre-packed surgical kits and instrument trays. A passive UHF tag costs a few pence, plus the labour of applying and encoding it, so item-level tagging only earns its keep when an item is worth enough to justify knowing exactly which one it was. On that stock it does. It gives you the lot number and expiry date of the specific device that went into a specific patient, an unattended read of a whole tray in one pass instead of scanning pieces individually, and an expiry sweep of a full shelf without opening it.

Weight sensing takes the middle band: the sutures, syringes, dressings and gloves that move in volume but are not worth a tag each. A load cell under the shelf turns a change in weight into a consumption count at no cost per item. It cannot tell you which unit left, only how many, but for replenishment and cycle counting that is the question actually being asked. Barcode covers the long tail, where the supplier has already printed the label and the hospital pays nothing extra.

Biometrics do a fourth and different job. Fingerprint and face recognition gate who can open the door, which is what turns a stock cupboard into an audit trail: a defensible record of which member of staff took which item at what time. For controlled drugs that record, rather than the inventory count, is often the reason a hospital buys the cabinet in the first place.

The hospital figures, and who stands behind them

NuboMed cites three hospital deployments. At Beijing Jishuitan Hospital in China, it says excess inventory fell by 90 per cent after ICMSMS was installed. At Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, a customer since 2015 and now running 78 smart terminals across its warehouse, pharmacy, wards and theatres, the company claims administrative workload down 75 per cent, medication errors down by more than 80 per cent and supply inventory down 87.6 per cent. At Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital in Thailand, it says medication preparation time fell to roughly a third of the previous manual process.

Those numbers should be read as vendor claims, because that is what they are. All of them reach the public through NuboMed and its distributor, in a trade article, with no independent audit and no published baseline. None of the three hospitals has published results of its own. The mix of a figure as precise as 87.6 per cent alongside round numbers like 90 and 75 also reads more like a sales deck than a study. The deployments are real, and 78 terminals at one Chinese tertiary hospital is a substantial installed base, but the percentages are not evidence in the way a published result would be.

Yoon Jung-kwon said the system “integrates logistics and inventory data within hospitals to simultaneously enhance operational efficiency and patient safety.”

The architecture has been on the record for years. An Intel solution brief co-authored with NuboMed in March 2020 set out the same SPD model, for supply, processing and distribution, across supply chain, pharmacy, ward distribution and patient administration, and confirmed the use of UHF RFID consumable cabinets. At that point the brief put NuboMed in more than 1,000 hospitals. Whether South Korea takes to it is a separate question, because the ICMSMS pitch depends on a hospital being willing to change how its stores, pharmacy and theatres hand items to one another. That is the organisational barrier that has slowed healthcare RFID projects elsewhere, and no cabinet removes it.
