- Region
- US
- Sector
- Retail
- Imposed by
- Walmart
- Applies to
- Suppliers of most US general merchandise
- Technology
- RFID required (UHF)
What the rule requires
Suppliers in in-scope US departments must put a RAIN (UHF) RFID tag on every sellable unit, using an inlay from the Auburn RFID Lab ARC list assigned to that category, with a unique GS1 serial. Walmart sends deadlines to suppliers directly and does not publish them, so check your category's ARC spec and your supplier letter; grocery, consumables and health and beauty had not been mandated as of Aug 2026.
Status: In force and expanding; no 2026 deadlines published
What it means for RFID
RFID News described Walmart's programme in September 2026 as the world's largest RFID programme. Suppliers in in-scope US departments must put a RAIN (UHF) tag on every sellable unit, using an inlay from the Auburn RFID Lab ARC list for their category and a unique GS1 serial. We reported that tags must be EPC Gen2v2 in the US 902 to 928 MHz band, and that missing, duplicated or malformed tags attract chargebacks.
That drives demand for ARC-approved inlays and for label partners who can print and encode serialised tags, including for UK and European brands selling into Walmart's US stores in mandated categories.
Walmart sends deadlines to suppliers directly and has published none for 2026, so the supplier letter and the category's ARC spec are the documents to check. Grocery, consumables and health and beauty had not been mandated as of August 2026, and any move into them would be the next expansion to watch.
