What the rule requires
Macy's began item-level RFID on size-intensive replenishment lines (about 30 percent of sales) from 2011 and by 2016 had written source tagging into its vendor standards manual, aiming to tag all items by the end of 2017; jewellery and cosmetics were the hard cases. Current scope, specs and penalties sit behind the MacysNet vendor portal, so suppliers should check the current vendor standards manual.
Status: Long-standing vendor requirement; current scope not public
What it means for RFID
Macy's requirement is UHF RFID source tagging by its vendors, written into the Macy's vendor standards manual by October 2016. It began in 2011 with size-intensive replenishment lines, about 30 per cent of sales, and was expanded in 2015 to all lines of business except jewellery and cosmetics, which were the hard cases.
Macy's set a goal of tagging all items by the end of 2017, but whether that was reached is not confirmed. The demand for tags and labels sits with Macy's suppliers of replenishment items.
Current scope, tag specifications and penalties are not public. Suppliers need to check the current vendor standards manual through the MacysNet vendor portal.
