What the rule requires
Exporters who self-seal full container loads at their own premises must use an approved vendor's RFID e-seal and upload the seal data; customs reads the seal at the port or ICD and, if intact, normally waives examination. Since July 2026 SEZ units can rely on the RFID seal alone at every gateway port.
Status: In force since Nov 2017; SEZ sealing standardised Jul 2026
What it means for RFID
India's e-seal rule makes an RFID seal the customs record for self-sealed export containers. Exporters who seal full container loads at their own premises must use an approved vendor's e-seal and upload the seal data, and customs reads the seal at the port or ICD; an intact seal normally means no examination.
That creates demand for e-seals from exporters and for readers at customs stations. E-seals have been mandatory for existing self-sealing exporters and AEOs since 8 November 2017 and for exporters previously using supervised factory stuffing since 20 November 2017, with CBIC targeting readers at all remaining customs stations by 1 January 2018.
Since 22 July 2026, Department of Commerce Instruction No. 124 lets SEZ export containers use only the RFID seal, with no extra sealing demanded at gateway ports. The sources do not state the seal's frequency.
