What the rule requires

On KGM motorways, vehicles pass toll points without stopping and the toll is taken from their HGS account. HGS is mainly a UHF RFID windscreen sticker system, so the change means more gantry readers and more demand for HGS tags. Camera use for enforcement has not been published.

Status: Rolling out: 35 of 106 KGM toll stations converted; 43 targeted by end 2026

What it means for RFID

Turkey's free-flow tolling depends on HGS tags. RFID News reported in August 2026 that HGS tags are passive UHF, working to the ISO/IEC 18000-6C air interface behind EPC Gen2 and RAIN RFID in the 865.6 to 867.6 MHz band.

Each converted station means overhead gantry readers in place of barrier lanes, and more demand for HGS tags. The work falls on KGM, which runs 106 toll stations, and motorway users pay through their HGS account. We reported that no details of the reader or gantry hardware at Akıncı had been published.

Thirty-five stations have been converted, including Adapazarı, Sultanbeyli, Gerede and Kandıra in 2026 and Akıncı in Ankara on 24 August 2026. KGM has named eight more, including Çeşme, Mersin and Suruç, to bring the total to 43 by December 2026.

Timeline

  1. Akıncı (Ankara) goes barrier-free
  2. Adapazarı, Sultanbeyli, Gerede and Kandıra stations converted
  3. Target: eight more stations, including Çeşme, Mersin and Suruç, bringing the total to 43
