What the rule requires

Every vehicle entering or driving in Islamabad Capital Territory needs an M-Tag, a passive RFID windscreen sticker costing Rs 250, read at entry points and checkpoints; untagged vehicles are stopped and fined. It is a security and traffic control measure layered on the same tag used for motorway tolls.

Status: In force; enforced from 16 Jan 2026, motorcycles included from 20 Feb 2026

What it means for RFID

Islamabad's rule makes a passive RFID windscreen sticker, the M-Tag, compulsory for every vehicle entering or driving in Islamabad Capital Territory. Tags cost Rs 250 and are read at city entry points and checkpoints, so the measure needs readers at those points as well as a tag on each vehicle. The sources do not state the frequency.

Because it uses the same tag as motorway tolls, it extends an existing tolling tag into city security and traffic control. Enforcement began on 16 January 2026 after a grace period, and M-Tag issuance for motorcycles began on 20 February 2026 with no motorcycle category exempt, which widens the tagged fleet.

Timeline

  1. Islamabad administration announces no entry without an M-Tag from 1 Jan 2026
  2. Original deadline, extended by 15 days
  3. Enforcement begins after grace period ends on 15 Jan; readers at city entry points
  4. M-Tag issuance for motorcycles begins; no motorcycle category exempt
