Every sheet, gown and pillowcase at Hospital Geral Clériston Andrade now carries a chip of its own. The hospital, known locally as HGCA and the largest public facility in the interior of Bahia, has extended RFID tracking across a linen pool of roughly 20,000 pieces, with five complete new sets delivered with transponders already built in.
The project was implemented with support from Sesab, the Bahia state health secretariat, and HGCA is the first interior hospital under Sesab’s direct management to formally receive the technology. The scale is not what makes it unusual. This is a hospital inside SUS, Brazil’s free universal health system, rather than a private group with a capital budget for inventory visibility, and RFID rarely reaches that side of the ledger.
From weighing linen to counting items
Conventional hospital linen management is an estimating exercise. Bulk goes out to the laundry, bulk comes back, and the difference between the two is absorbed as shrinkage that nobody can pin to a ward, a shift or a process. Per-item tagging replaces the estimate with a record. Each piece is enrolled in the system with its own identity and assigned to a specific sector, so location, dwell time, damage and loss all attach to something countable.
Anna Júlia Barbosa of Sesab’s general directorate put the accountability point plainly. “Each item receives a chip with its own identity and is registered in the system, being directed to a specific sector. If there’s loss or damage, we can identify where it occurred and act in a targeted way,” she said.
Luis Fernando Gomes, who runs the rouparia (linen service) at HGCA, confirmed the hospital currently manages around 20,000 pieces, and that five complete new sets arrived with chips integrated rather than retrofitted.
The 24-hour clock
The most operationally interesting part of the deployment is the way it makes a contract measurable. The laundry service works to a maximum 24-hour turnaround, and the system now documents whether a given item is sitting in a ward, in transit, or with the contracted laundry. Items held beyond the 24-hour threshold trigger alerts.
That has two uses. It gives the hospital evidence when the return standard slips, which is the difference between a service level agreement and a service level aspiration. It also drives redistribution: Elizângela Santos, also of Sesab’s general directorate, noted that pieces detected as sitting too long in one area can be moved to sectors under higher demand. Linen that is stagnant in a quiet ward is functionally the same as linen that has been lost, and until now most hospitals had no way to tell the two apart.
HGCA general director Cristiana França framed it in public-money terms. “Computerised linen control means greater organisation, economy and efficiency in public resource management,” she said, adding that the hospital is “advancing in solutions that enhance our processes”.
The tags sit on someone else’s balance sheet
The service provider is Atmosfera Elis, the Brazilian textile rental and hygiene operation of a multinational group, described in the announcement as focused on sustainability and technological innovation. That detail changes the commercial shape of the story.
Under a textile rental model the hospital does not buy the linen, and it does not buy the tags either. The provider owns the stock, launders it, replaces it, and embeds the RFID into its own inventory. Item-level identification serves the provider first, because it underpins billing, loss recovery and rotation counts, and the hospital gets the visibility as part of the service. For a SUS facility with no realistic route to funding an RFID capital project, that is very often the only way the technology arrives at all, and it explains why managed-linen contracts are quietly becoming one of the larger installed bases of RFID in healthcare worldwide.
What this class of system normally runs on
Neither Sesab nor the hospital has specified the air interface, tag supplier or reader hardware, so nothing should be assumed about this particular contract. As general context, laundry and textile rental RFID is overwhelmingly UHF RAIN RFID to ISO 18000-63 (EPC Gen2), using laundry-hardened transponders sewn into a seam or heat-sealed into the fabric so they survive repeated industrial wash, extraction and tunnel-finishing cycles. The commercial case rests on bulk reading, with cabinet or tunnel readers counting a full cage or trolley in a single pass and handheld readers used for spot audits and stock takes on the ward. Item-level counting only pays for itself when nobody has to scan items one at a time.
More Bahia hospitals to follow in 2026
Sesab has said the initiative will extend to further state healthcare facilities through 2026, with the aim of setting a common standard for inventory management across the public network. That turns a single site into a programme, and it means Atmosfera Elis is building RFID into public health contracts in Brazil at a pace that has so far attracted no English-language trade coverage at all.
