New RFID Implementations, Hardware and Tags

Limpink, an industrial laundry based in Murcia, Spain, has adopted a customised RFID tag-on-label solution supplied by Datamars Textile ID, placing item-level identification inside the same label that carries the laundry’s branding and care information. The laundry handles high volumes for hospitality, restaurant and event-venue customers, where linen turns around fast and accuracy is the difference between a profitable contract and an argument over missing stock.

Tag-on-label means the transponder is integrated into the textile label during manufacture rather than being sewn, welded or heat-sealed in as a separate patch later. The result is one component instead of two, no extra tagging step on receipt, and no visible plastic pill on a hotel napkin. Datamars has not published the specific chip variant or wash-cycle rating used at Limpink, though its tag-on-label and LaundryChip transponders are predominantly UHF.

What RFID actually does in an industrial laundry

The core of it is item-level traceability. Every sheet, tablecloth, chef jacket or napkin gets a unique identity that survives the wash, so the laundry knows which customer an item belongs to, when it was last processed, and where it is in the cycle. That single fact unlocks most of the rest.

Wash-cycle counting is the obvious one. Textiles have a finite service life, and a tag that increments a count on every pass gives an objective retirement point rather than a visual guess. It also settles disputes about whether an item was abused on site or simply worn out in normal service.

Sortation is where the throughput gain lands. Soiled linen arrives in bulk bags, and reading a whole cage as it passes through a tunnel or portal antenna array is far quicker than handling items one at a time. The same bulk read supports goods-in and goods-out counts, so deliveries and collections are reconciled automatically instead of by clipboard.

For textile rental businesses, that reconciliation is the billing engine. Charges are usually per item processed or per item on hire, and RFID replaces sampled or estimated counts with a real one. It also exposes shrinkage. When items stop coming back from a particular site, the data shows it early, which turns loss control into a conversation backed by numbers. Rotation improves too, because stock that would otherwise sit at the bottom of a shelf can be identified and cycled rather than left while newer linen wears out.

Why UHF, and why the tag has to be tough

UHF RFID suits laundry work because it reads at range and in bulk. Reading several hundred items in a cage in a few seconds is not realistic with a technology that needs items presented individually, and it is that bulk read that makes the business case stack up in a high-volume plant.

The environment is brutal, which is why laundry transponders are a specialist product rather than a repurposed retail inlay. Tags face industrial washing, high-temperature drying, chemical detergents, and the mechanical shock of tunnel washers and presses, often for hundreds of cycles. Datamars Textile ID sells its transponder range under the LaundryChip name and says more than 500 million are in service worldwide, with an automated tag-on-label production solution launched in 2025 and a gamma-resistant variant, rated for more than 100 sterilisation cycles, added in 2026 for healthcare textiles.

Limpink’s deployment is a modest one in scale terms, but it is a good illustration of where the technology has settled: not a bolt-on tracking gadget, just part of the label.
