New RFID Implementations, Hardware and Tags

Hansol Logistics has started full-scale operations of a battery cell specialised logistics business in the United States, and it is leaning on RFID and GPS tracking to keep sight of shipments as they move around the country. The South Korean logistics operator said on 10 August that it has built a new logistics hub in Kokomo, Indiana, following the establishment of a transport subsidiary in Atlanta, Georgia, in April.

The service targets battery cell manufacturers producing in the US, and it covers rather more than haulage. Hansol supplies the returnable packaging that cells travel in, then handles retrieval, cleaning and storage of that packaging once it has been emptied. Bundled with transport and warehousing, that gives a customer one provider for the whole loop instead of several separate contracts.

Real-time visibility across the loop

Tracking sits underneath all of it. Hansol says it applies a radio frequency identification (RFID) system alongside GPS-based tracking to monitor transport status in real time, and uses its local hubs to offer storage and just-in-time supply. The company expects the combination to improve supply chain efficiency for clients and to bring their logistics costs down. It has not published technical detail, so the frequency band, tag format and hardware all remain unstated.

The pairing is a familiar one in freight. GPS answers where a vehicle is. RFID answers what is on it, and what came off at each stop. A reader at a dock door or a yard gate can confirm the identity of tagged items or containers without anyone hand-scanning a barcode, and that hands-free read is where most of the labour saving comes from.

Returnable packaging is a classic RFID case

In the wider industry, returnable transit packaging is one of the most established applications for RAIN RFID, the UHF standard that operates in the 860 to 960 MHz band. Pooled assets such as racks, totes and purpose-built containers are expensive, they circulate between sites belonging to different companies, and they have a habit of not coming back. Tagging them makes it possible to count a pool accurately, measure dwell time at each location and chase the stragglers before replacements have to be bought. Whether Hansol’s deployment follows that pattern is not stated in the announcement, though its description of packaging supply, retrieval, cleaning and storage describes exactly that operational problem.

Kokomo and the Midwest battery corridor

The Kokomo site gives Hansol a Midwest base serving battery plants near Detroit and across Indiana, alongside existing operations in Los Angeles in the west and Atlanta in the east. The company frames it as a strategic link between the cell logistics service and inland transportation, which in practice means shorter runs into the plants and a nearer point at which stock can be held.

Hansol Logistics started its battery logistics business in China in 2011, expanded into Vietnam and Malaysia, and moved into Europe in 2020. In China it has run a dedicated cell logistics operation built around EV battery transport, and it is now applying that experience to the US market for energy storage system cells.

Battery cells are heavy, valuable and classed as dangerous goods, so knowing which units sit in which container, and where that container is, is not a nice-to-have. It is the difference between a clean chain of custody and a costly guess.
