Item-level RFID can lift airport duty free stock accuracy to as much as 99 per cent, according to Checkpoint Systems, which puts typical barcode-based counting at 70 to 80 per cent by comparison. The figures are the vendor’s own rather than an independent audit, but the underlying argument for RFID duty free deployments is well understood by anyone who has worked a terminal store: passive UHF tags can be read in bulk, without line of sight, so a full count that used to eat a shift can be done in minutes.
Scale is part of the pitch. Checkpoint cites 2.35 billion international passengers passing through global terminals in 2024, all of them shopping inside a dwell time measured in minutes rather than hours. Demand at an airport store swings with the flight board, the customers are transient and multilingual, and the stock sitting behind the counter tends to be expensive. If an item is not on the shelf when a passenger walks past, the sale does not happen later. It does not happen at all.
Why item-level RFID in travel retail changes the count
The building blocks Checkpoint describes are familiar RAIN RFID practice: source tagging at the point of manufacture, verification of goods on receipt at the distribution centre and again at the store, item-level stock capture on the sales floor, and replenishment decisions driven by that live data rather than a periodic count. Reads happen in bulk, so goods-in stops being a manual, one-barcode-at-a-time exercise, and multiple items can be identified together at the till. Checkpoint points to its SFERO RFID checkout and the ItemOptix software platform as the front and back ends of that chain.
Because every unit carries a unique identifier rather than just a product code, loss prevention shifts from reactive to something closer to exception reporting, and brands get a traceable record they can use against counterfeiting and grey-market diversion. Checkpoint also makes the point, worth repeating for airport operators who ask, that UHF tags do not interfere with airport security screening.
RFID perfume tagging and wine and spirits tags
The categories that dominate duty free are also the awkward ones at UHF. Liquid absorbs and detunes at 860 to 960 MHz, and glass, metallised film and mirrored finishes reflect the signal and cast read shadows across a pallet or a shelf. Perfume compounds the problem with small carton formats and premium designs that leave very little room for an antenna, let alone a visible label. Checkpoint says it supplies inlays optimised for cosmetics and, for wine and premium spirits, BottleID tags engineered for liquid-filled products so that items can be identified from the bottling line through logistics and storage to the airport point of sale.
Where this goes next, on Checkpoint’s account, is omnichannel fulfilment out of terminal stock, frictionless and self-checkout, autonomous store formats and analytics built on item-level history. There is also a clear opening for systems integrators, since most of the value only appears once RFID data is wired into the retail, inventory and POS systems an operator already runs. Expect the tagged assortment to widen too, out from perfume, wine and spirits into general merchandise.
