Tracker entry M59: Nigeria: NCAA plan to mandate RFID baggage tags
- Region
- Africa
- Sector
- Aviation
- Imposed by
- Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority
- Applies to
- All airlines in Nigeria
- Technology
- RFID required
What the rule requires
Nigeria's aviation regulator intends to make airlines replace barcode bag tags with RFID, with readers on conveyors and ramps and a passenger tracking app, but it is not yet a rule. Airlines, ground handlers and FAAN should watch for an amendment to the Nigerian civil aviation regulations.
Status: Proposed; NCAA reviewing regulations, no effective date set
What it means for RFID
If adopted, the rule would replace barcode bag tags with RFID for all airlines in Nigeria. That means demand for RFID bag tags, for readers on conveyors and ramps, and for a passenger tracking app, with airlines, ground handlers and FAAN the organisations most directly affected.
It is not yet a rule. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) announced the plan on 11 August 2026, and the aviation minister approved a review by the agencies. No effective date has been set and no tag frequency or standard has been named. The step to watch is an amendment to the Nigerian civil aviation regulations.
