What the rule requires

Ghana is moving to number plates with embedded RFID chips linked to the Ghana Card, so police and DVLA can check vehicles electronically. New registrations get them first from Jan 2027; DVLA has said it will announce how and when existing vehicles change over, so treat the 2028 end date as provisional.

Status: Regulations passed (L.I. 2519); pilot under way; issuance from Jan 2027

What it means for RFID

Ghana's programme puts an RFID chip in vehicle number plates, linked to the Ghana Card so police and the DVLA can check vehicles electronically. RFID News reported in July 2026 that the chips are passive UHF inlays built into each plate during embossing, read by security agencies with handheld or fixed readers.

That means demand for plate inlays through a single centralised production system, and for readers at checkpoints. We also reported plans to link the plate database to toll infrastructure, motor insurance records, the police and the judiciary, which would widen the places where plates are read.

The DVLA confirmed on 29 September 2026 that the pilot had started. Official issuance begins in January 2027 with unregistered vehicles; the DVLA has said it will announce how and when existing vehicles change over, so the 31 December 2028 end date is provisional.

Timeline

  1. Original start date, suspended while the plate regulations were still before Parliament
  2. Planned pilot start with government vehicles
  3. DVLA confirms the pilot has started with selected vehicles
  4. Official issuance begins, starting with unregistered vehicles
  5. Announced end of the window for re-plating all existing vehicles
