Whitbread PLC, which owns Premier Inn and its compact city-centre sibling hub by Premier Inn, said on 28 October 2026 that hub has begun issuing guest room keys into Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, starting what the company calls the world’s largest roll-out of mobile keys held in a phone wallet. hub goes first. Whitbread says the service will reach the wider Premier Inn estate of more than 850 hotels in the UK and Germany, covering over 97,000 rooms, with completion expected by the end of 2027.
Guests check in online from 48 hours before arrival through the Premier Inn app, and the key lands in the wallet once a room is assigned. A QR code at the hotel offers a second route, and reception desks and self-serve kiosks stay for guests who prefer them. Whitbread credits piloting at hub London Farringdon (Old Bailey) with the research behind the decision. Its mobile key page listed only a handful of live properties when checked on 30 October 2026: three hub hotels in London plus core Premier Inn sites including Birmingham NEC and Manchester Old Trafford.
What happens at the door
A wallet room key is a contactless credential held in the phone’s secure element and presented over NFC at 13.56 MHz, the high-frequency band used by contactless cards and tap-to-pay. The guest holds the handset or watch to the lock’s reader, which authenticates it cryptographically exactly as it would a plastic key card, so no app needs opening at the door.
Two platform features do the practical work. Express Mode lets the key respond without the phone being woken or unlocked, which is what makes a wallet key quicker than a plastic card rather than merely equivalent to it. Power Reserve keeps an Apple device presenting the credential after the battery is flat, a window both Premier Inn and lock maker dormakaba put at up to five hours. Apple’s platform security documentation covers the rest of the hospitality feature set: provisioning before arrival, check-in tiles on the pass, key updates so a stay can be extended, multi-room keys on one pass and automatic archiving of expired keys.
Worth stating plainly, because it is often blurred: hands-free unlocking at a distance is not part of this. Apple documents Bluetooth Low Energy with Ultra Wideband for digital car keys, not hotel keys, and Whitbread claims no UWB. Guests will be tapping.
Why the partner list runs to five names
Premier Inn is buying the guest-facing layer as software as a service, on the Alliants Experience Platform (AXP). Alliants is a hospitality technology firm founded in 2009 in Southampton whose platform already supports more than 100,000 hotel rooms, spanning messaging, contactless check-in, payments and digital keys. Apple, Google, Dormakaba, Legic and Assa Abloy are the other named delivery partners.
Each sits at a different layer. Apple and Google own the wallet platforms and the device secure elements, and set the rules for what may be provisioned into them. Dormakaba and Assa Abloy make electronic access control and door hardware, Assa Abloy’s hotel lock business trading as Vingcard; dormakaba says wallet capability arrives on selected locks and readers by firmware update rather than hardware replacement, which matters at 97,000 rooms. Legic, of Wetzikon, Switzerland, supplies secure credential technology and the trusted service layer that gets a key safely from a hotel’s systems into a phone.
That trusted service role is the part buyers underestimate. A Bluetooth app key can be delivered as data into a hotel’s own app, leaving the app to handle the credential. A wallet key cannot work that way: it must be personalised and injected into a hardware secure element owned by Apple or Google, under their certification regimes, with matching keys held lock-side. That needs key management, hardware security modules and lifecycle control for issuing, extending and revoking credentials, which is why a wallet deployment pulls in a credential specialist as well as a lock vendor. The terms are explained in the RFID and NFC glossary.
“Guests stay with us because they want a quick recharge before heading out into the city for work or play so we know every moment is precious. We’re delighted to help make life even easier with the choice of fast-track mobile keys allowing guests to check in before arrival and go straight to room using their phone,” said Yasmin Mukhida-Olushola, Head of Marketing for hub.
How the scale claim stands up
The “world’s largest” framing is Whitbread’s, and it is a claim about wallet keys rather than digital keys in general. Hotel keys in Apple Wallet date from December 2021, when Hyatt became the first chain to offer them, at six US hotels. Google Wallet gained hotel key support in June 2024, with the Clarion Hotel Post in Gothenburg, part of the Nordic group Strawberry, among the first live. Bigger chain digital key programmes exist, but have typically run inside a brand’s own app, a different architecture from a wallet-provisioned credential.
The commercial backdrop is moving too. On 17 September 2026 dormakaba announced a binding agreement to acquire Alliants, putting the guest platform and the lock hardware under one owner. Whitbread flags two benefits beyond speed: front-desk staff redeployed to host rather than issue cards, and fewer plastic key cards ordered, which it expects to cut waste to landfill.
